Label/Format: Polydor – these have a very light and delicate textured feel to the fingertip – they are certainly not dead smooth (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both immaculate as new: ultra clean and highly attractive, if there any spindle traces present, they sure are hard to see. This came from that collection where the owner played the record once and put direct to tape. Carefully stored and left alone, I doubt if this record or cover has seen light-of-day for decades.

Cat Number: 583040.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 136 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Moderately scarce and the early stereo copies are elusive. Try to ever find a better example too, a copy, now played twice will never be easy to find – this set could easily pass for new.

Brief Info: An album available as a double set but also issued as two single albums – this being the live album recorded at the Fillmore in the US. It features the heavier side of Cream and a superb blues-based harmonica song in ‘Traintime’. Also a stunning drum solo on ‘Toad’ by Baker. Well recorded with quality sound and it will never be heard better than this. A copy time has forgotten and a reference standard stereo example for the connoisseur Cream collector and rock fans alike. I can hardly recommend this gem highly enough.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Moderate, but few retain the stunning looks of this one.

Cover Grade and Format: Can any 40+ year old cover ever seriously be graded Mint? Well yes, this one can and I am a seller who rarely ever uses the word on its own. Just about any cover can be looked at hard enough to find a tiny blemish but this is as good as manufacture day and finding a better one is likely to prove close to impossible. A single, fully laminated format. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd. This album was available in mono and stereo, this is probably the mono cover with a pristine mint stereo sticker on the back covering the incorrect mono mode for this stereo copy.

Lamination – Front & Back: Imagine walking into a record shop back in the late 60s, thumbing through the racks and finding ‘Wheels of Fire – Live at the Fillmore’. Well this is probably the nearest you will ever get these days to find an original stereo copy that looks like brand new. I exaggerate not, if a better, fresher, clean, less played copy of this can be found, I sure would like to see. The laminate gleams with a mirror-like shine with ultra clarity. The only blemish, that has nothing to do with wear, is a laminate lift on the back spine. I deliberately took the cover pictures without flash as no to wash out this detail, so this can be clearly seen. This I would be close to certain, would have been just the same when purchased. Laminate near edges often did not adhere in manufacture, but sometimes tighens over time and lifts – it has NOTHING to do with wear and this cover has none. The sheer beauty of the gem has to be seen for real to be fully appreciated. Cover protected from day one and my pictures for Ebay is probably the first time it has ever been handled since purchased all those years ago. Even under angled light, there is barely even a hairline or mark to the glass-smooth surfaces. Totally uncreased, ultra fresh and dead flat. The super-clear laminate has barely a trace of friction rubbing and has no scuffs or abrasions at all. The supremely detailed psych artwork has a rich intense black backdrop and the silver-grey details look breathtaking. Barely a record impression to be seen and the opening edge is crisp and unchipped. A classic sleeve time has totally ignored and I guess the one and only original owner did too. This goes beyond beautiful and will thrill all cover connoisseurs reading this piece.

Top & Bottom Edges: Unworn and both straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, ultra sharp with no wear or feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Stunning as new again: Solid but made thin, straight, uncompressed and square. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. Even though thin, the text is perfectly centred and my fingertip text felt no blemishes at all, the entire spine is ultra smooth and even here, retains incredible shine and clarity.

Corners: A small ‘white’ on the top left corner but again, I am sure it was present from new. All have immaculate shape with no wear or dinks, even tip creases are absent.

Cover Summary: Put as simply as possible: ‘Immaculate’. What an absolute joy seeing this cover like this, it will remind those of a certain age what these once used to look like. This beautiful item will please all collectors, even the most discerning collectors out there.

The Inner: The Polydor lined inner is also practically Mint and clearly has barely left the cover.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint - a word I rarely use on its own but anything less for this beauty would not be justified. A once-played record to me, they simply do not get seen or heard better. A supreme visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Totally unmarked and looks just-pressed. Visually the best example you could wish to see, it will please all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Looks Mint, plays Mint, this outstanding record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. No surface sounds, no pops or clicks either and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will even get close to this, let alone outperform it I feel certain. How can perfection be bettered? Both channels are clean and sharp, I know this record had been played once only and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove as close to impossible to find better as it gets and can is unresevedly recommended to all.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
