Rarity: The actual title itself is moderate, but finding the very early stereos that include the much scarcer FULLY laminated cover is harder. Especially ones in impressive, clean condition.

Album Information: Arguably, the world’s most famous blues-rock, power trio’s greatest album – a massive issue which still sounds wonderfully fresh. Clapton, Bruce and Baker’s most consistently perfect studio album. The Reaction copies are something to treasure, with it’s superb psychedelic cover artwork (by Martin Sharpe, here on this very early copy, fully laminated) and wonderful dynamic sound. When found in such clean condition, they are a thing to treasure. The stereo mix is superb and very different from the mono version – both are essential. ‘Disraeli Gears’ peaked at 5 and 4 respectively in the UK and US, very commendable in a year that saw the issue of so many wonderful records. The beautiful vibrant coloured cover matched the feel for the time perfectly for a psychedelic London. The blues feel of the band was slowly slipping away and the brilliant surreal lyrics of Pete Brown suited Jack Bruce’s finest vocals. The words ‘classic’ and ‘essential’ are definitely not over-used on this album. Early copies of this record, when found in either mono or stereo are so often trashed, simply played to destruction, with unlistenable distortion, groove wear and scratches, this 1968 pressing has more than just survived, it’s a beauty and plays beautifully with little unwanted. The fully laminated cover pictures should speak for themselves, an age-defying gem.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): arguably even better. A single format and laminated on BOTH sides. This means the spine was protected as well, many of the front only laminated later ones has no spine laminated and often eroded very quickly. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day with ‘Patents Pending’ text, includes the 1967 date-coded polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Lamination: Supreme artwork and one of the landmark covers of it’s era. So famous and desirable and seen to absolute maximum advantage when fully laminated. A piece of vintage art, the colour depth and freshness fully retained on these very shiny surfaces that have minimal traces of creasing and no lifting at all – what a major plus that is. There are several laminate ends on this cover, but all the exposed edge strip areas are superb, clean and hardly rubbed or grubbied. The odd tiny tip rub or edge hairline crease near impossible to avoid totally, so just whisker of my highest near mint grading, but this is one of the finest and outstandingly beautiful original fully laminated examples I have seen for some considerable time.

Top & Bottom Edge: Both fully laminated, unscuffed, smooth and strongly intact. Just tiny rubs to the very end tips, all else fantastic, almost as issued.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still quite sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record entered on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. The exposed strips where the laminate ends being quite wide, clean and hardly worn or aged.

Spine and Text: Naturally thin, but still solid and still quite straight with any bowing minimal. As stated already, this first cover had this crucial area laminated, so all the text is fully present and in this case perfectly centred as-seen. The small details make the difference between average and exceptional.

Corners: Small tip rubs on the right pair, minimal traces on the spine ones. Very fine to excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: This is a cover to hold and admire, that stunning artwork beneath lovely clear barely dulled laminate is a thing of genuine beauty. Now over 50-years-old, one that has hardly aged at all. Cover-protected and gorgeous, this could prove a major upgrade for many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): marked down only for natural darkening of the white paper and with a corner crease (often deliberate to stop the record sliding out), this one date-coded 107 (October 1967). Polylined and neat as seen through crisp untorn window circles, all edges unsplit with no repairs. So only quite mildly aged as is really to be expected.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and looks only modestly played with a surface mark on side two that does nothing. As seen critically under bright light, only a very few ultra fine wispy surface marks. Viewed in average room light only the one light superficial mark shows. A highly impressive visual copy that has lovely shine, freshness and weight. It retains attractive lustre and like the cover, defies its age. This album usually gets heavily played, and why not?, it’s a classic, so a refreshing change to find one appearing to have been – this reiterated by superb sound. This evergreen classic should please many, if not most collectors.

Record Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb stereo album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. The merest hint of contact sound between a couple of tracks on the joining grooves (this being played on a very revealing system) and just the odd sporadic click – barely any really. Few available copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
