Disraeli Gears is the second album by British blues-rock group Cream. It was released in November 1967 and went on to reach #5 on the UK album chart. It was also their American breakthrough, becoming a massive seller there in 1968, reaching #4 on American charts. The album features the two singles "Strange Brew" and "Sunshine of Your Love"(BOTH heard above). By this time, the group was veering quite heavily away from their blues roots to indulge in more psychedelic sounds.

The title of the album was taken from an inside joke. Eric Clapton had been thinking of buying a racing bicycle and was discussing it with Ginger Baker, when a roadie named Mick Turner commented, "its got them Disraeli Gears", meaning to say "derailleur gears", but instead alluding to 19th Century British Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli. The band thought this was hilarious, and decided that it should be the title of their next album. Had it not been for Mick, the album would simply have been entitled Cream. CONDITION OF THE RECORD:

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, we grade ALL records under a strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight).

  • WE GRADE THE ALBUM AS STRONG VG+  Plays remarkably well. Little/faint background 'static' between cuts (dead wax) only, NOT really within cuts. Audio is loud and clear. CAUTION>the vinyl is not MINT or NEAR-MINT. It is, however, in nice condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.14 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters). We see a slight mark which I've seen before and I'd call it a slight 'heat-rash' (MOST will not see this). DOES NOT affect listening experience.
  • The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, semi-flexible vinyl. This vinyl was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such vinyl pressings is full-bodied, bright and rich in quality. 
  • Quality speaking, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior digital recording!! 

 

 

CONDITION OF THE 'MONO MARKED' COVER (FRONT AND BACK READS 'MONO'):

THE COVER IS QUITE NICE (for being 42 years young); VG+-

The following flaws or imperfections are found on the cover:

 

  • Cover shows the smallest of ring impression; many will say, "none at all". On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring impression wear as a <1 (front) and as a <1 (back).
    • Cover shows the smallest of corner wear (tip wear only ~ not significant). One corner (back, lower right), shows a '2-line' bend mark (not significant). On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of corner wear (relatively tip only) as a 2.
    • Cover shows a few very small surface wrinkles and few surface lines (not significant here in terms of whole album cover). On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of wrinkle wear as a 2.
    • Cover shows a 'very well done' clear tape attachment to bottom and top seam (many will not even see this). Probably done to help split seams.
    • Cover NOTE>(back), the 'square' announcing album cuts is NOT A STICKER! It is actually part of the thick 1967 cardboard cover! Please see pictures below.
