Label/Format: Vanguard – very first issue with the intense and very matt black surfaces (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both pristine condition and struggling to find any spindle marks at all. Ultra clean, fresh and hugely attractive, I can hardly imagine finding this vintage first issue record better. It comes from the same collection as the other Country Joe album I am currently offering.

Cat Number: SVRL 19006.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A very good solid weight.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce: not a big seller especially in the UK. Finding this late-60s album in this condition is a huge achievement and such examples are rare. A copy hardly even played and with sound of the highest quality, in fact it plays nigh-on perfect.

Brief Info: The band’s third album and another terrific album. Less-lauded than the previous two, but that I have never understood. More McDonald wit, protest and political themes with superb music. This is an archive quality copy, beautifully pressed and hardly even played. When record of this age and type are seen this clean, they are thing of genuine beauty – no penetrating old worn-out stylus have been anywhere near this barely used copy. For collectors who want their vintage gems that come very close to reminding of new, this offers exactly that.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and tempted to grade my full Mint(-) on this one. A single, fully laminated format and the original ‘Vanguard’ copyright warning. Printed and made in England and includes it’s original date-coded inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Quite a flimsy cover made with thin card and rarely will it be found much better than this. The laminate both sides remains shiny, clear and very fresh with barely any dulling (even under light) and no lifting. Any creases are ultra fine and faint hairline types on the very edges with none at all away from the sides. The one-and-only original owner certainly knew how to look after his records.

Top Edge: One tiny and fine hairline surface crease-crack. Still straight and unrubbed.

Bottom Edge: Practically perfect with nothing to fault.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint. Record enters on this edge which is guaranteed untrimmed. Viewing end-on, it reitterates how thin the card is making the lack of wear all the more remarkable.

Spine and Text: Solid, but again quite thin, straight with a little gentle compression, all text is near perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate. A microscopic chip to one letter ‘E’.

Corners: Barely any wear to any and all retain excellent to near mint shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong, and really exceptional all-round example of this quite fragile 1968 cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: only marked down a grade for natural darkening as this has hardly any real wear. This is polylined which remains very clear as seen through two totally pristine window circles. Just a small crinkle near the hole area. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This is guaranteed the original inner sleeve with it’s 108 (October 1968) date code as seen in close-up making it one of the earliest copies ever made here in the UK, reitterated by complete ‘1’ matrix stampers seen above.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed on top quality vinyl. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface traces minuscule and even under angled light, not easy to see. Visually a super record that blows away it’s vintage and will please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautifully preserved record plays up to and even exceeds it’s very high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match let alone outperform this ultimate first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been incredibly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. I am as certainly as I ever could be, this both cover and record are unlikely to be found better or cleaner than this. This superb acid-psych classic merits my highest possible recommendation – fans of this band and genre – do NOT lose this one.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
