Ostensibly about the keeping of musical time, The Timekeepers has at its core a sense of musical exuberance, two masters of the keyboard domain jammin’. Although the pairing of Count Basie with Oscar Peterson may seem like a gimmick, The Timekeepers was Peterson’s and Basie’s fourth recording together, giving the two of them, disparate as they are, a sense of history that shows. The interplay of "Soft Winds," for instance, is that of two supple musical talents at play, pushing melody along like a big rock -- together, each taking his turn. Basie and Peterson open "Rent Party" without accompaniment, dropping in notes and giving the silence in between its due respect.
Over a sixty-plus year career, William “Count” Basie helped to establish jazz as a serious art form played not just in clubs but in theaters and concert halls. He established swing as one of jazz's predominant styles, and solidified the link between jazz and the blues. Count Basie, the jazz pianist whose spare, economic keyboard style and supple rhythmic drive made his orchestra one of the most influential groups of the Big Band era, died of cancer at Doctors' Hospital in Hollywood, Fla. Apr 27, 1984
Peterson’s influence on his fellow musicians is difficult to estimate. His extraordinary level of skill made his playing difficult to emulate directly, as did his lack of affiliation with a particular style or idiom. However, he was an early inspiration to many pianists. Herbie Hancock once wrote, “Oscar Peterson redefined swing for modern jazz pianists for the latter half of the 20th century... I consider him the major influence that formed my roots in jazz piano playing. He mastered the balance between technique, hard blues grooving, and tenderness.” Nanaimo, BC, native Diana Krall once called Peterson “the reason I became a jazz pianist. In my high school yearbook it says that my goal is to become a jazz pianist like Oscar Peterson.” On what would have been Peterson’s 97th birthday — 15 August 2022 — the Royal Canadian Mint issued three million $1 circulation coins commemorating him. The coin features an illustration of Peterson playing the piano with the final notes of “Hymn to Freedom” rising above. Peterson is the first Black Canadian and the first musician to be featured on a Canadian circulation coin.
In 2007 Oscar Peterson’s health declined. He canceled his plans to perform at the Toronto Jazz Festival and a Carnegie Hall all-star concert that was to be given in his honour. Peterson died on December 23, 2007, of kidney failure at his home in Mississauga, Ontario. Everyone should bow their heads in awe and appreciation that we have for these great geniuses of American music. For their like will never come again.
