BACK IN 1985 AFTER READIND THE PITT REPORT BY KENETH PITT I REALISED THAT THIS OBSCURE LP IS A PIECE OF RECONDITE TREASURE THAT HOLDS A MASSIVE CONNECTION TO THE DAVID BOWIE STORY. THIS WILL BE EXPLAINED FOLLOWING MY ITEM DESCRIPTION. 

This is an original 1971 UK First Original pressing of the genius Psych/Rock LP called FIRST UTTERANCE by Comus on DAWN records. 
THE SLEEVE.
What a sleeve... Incredible artwork here. This sleeve was never laminated so prone to pick up all kinds of damage this one is one of the better ones that turn up for sale. Very slight dulling to the edges the only real damage is a crease (top left hand corner) this crease is transposed (top right corner) of the back of the album jacket. There is very slight wear to the spine the first 3 letters to the word FIRST are worn but all other spinal writings that`s UTTERANCE DAWN RECORDS and Cat number can all be read clearly. There is also slight wear to the Pabloesque inside of the gatefold but again no real damage and no unwanted doodling or handwriting anywhere on the item. The original inner sleeve is present and in Very Good + condition also this copy comes with the seldomly seen lyric sheet, these are invariably missing here it is and in excellent condition.
THE VINYL. The record labels to both sides show spindle wear but are lovely and clean Double click the pictures. The vinyl to both sides have a lovely lustre and sheen , they show only the slightest hairlines very very light and have no intrusion on the playback at all. There are no feelable scratches anywhere on this record and it plays superbly all the way. If your listening with an ultra critical ear you may find something in the quieter passages but that will be static travelling through the arm of the turntable and not damage to the vinyl. The record plays a strong 9/10 overall. To those of you that have not heard this LP well your just letting the best things in life pass you by. There is some incredible guitar work on here savagely fierce one moment, gentle as a baby the next, the music on this album is so unrecognised and underrated and that is plainly wrong. 
From the mid 60s to the mid 70s (in my opinion) the musical talent that existed in England were leading the rest of the world by spearheading every multi directional musical genres that existed . Imagine being in a band at that time when the Beatles/Stones Zep Faces Who Kinks Bowie Roxy Bolan and all the others were active..... Did a fiercer time to succeed ever exist in music ?
This LP right here is by one of the many who never made it. The OGWT let this group slip through the cracks ! This on one of the finest Rock LPs ever made it gets listed as Prog I don`t agree and getting harder to find as the years tick by. 
In 1969 David Bowie did an invited audience concert at the BBC Purcell rooms, this was full of DJs and rock journalists and people from the music industry, Comus were the support act. Bowie was so furious at his manager Ken Pitt who picked Comus to support as they simply outshone him.  In the Pitt report Ken goes on " Of all the times I saw Bowie play live, that concert at the Purcell rooms was his finest" 
Comus outshone David Bowie and for that Bowie sacked Pitt directly afterwards. 
Pitt admitted his error and later said "had he got things right for the Purcell rooms gig everything that happened to Bowie in 1972 would have happened in 1969." Comus really are that good !  When I read that back in 85 I soon hunted out this monster of an LP.  Pitts words had deeply intrigued me.  I had to hear this band who had messed it all up for the great David Bowie. 
It seemed so unimaginable to me that anybody could do this.
I actually believe Ken Pitt picked the right band to support Bowie.  David watched this band and I think saw the threat. Then went out onstage and did the best performance of his life thus far.  Ken Pitt said that and I believe him.  As all of you who have read the Pitt report know only a man of honesty and honour could have possibly wrote that book. Pitts honest intellectual character jumps out from the pages at you.  The only honest manager David ever had. Bowie should have had them as his permanent support.
I think Bowie would have picked this band. I can see loads of David`s fans going for this band as they did with Iggy Pop and Lou Redd and the many others. I would go so far as to suggest if your dulling slightly of going round the same old hamster wheels of Iggy Lou Roxy etc and want a great challenge. 
Listen to First Utterance by Comus. You will get a lot out of this fascinating LP. It is The True work of English Poetic 1970s artistic Genius that was simply too ahead of its time that it had the talent and the balls to have a go at out shining DAVID BOWIE ! Cheeky bastards !!! Stole Bowies limelight ! And they got away with it.  This album goes from silence to absolute rage and is a work of acoustic Genius on many levels. Any SERIOUS Bowie fan would fall in love with this LP to the level you fell when you fully understood Hunky Dory.  This album truly is that good.
