Critics Opine

Writing to Forkel in, or about, 1774, C. P. E. Bach said of his father: "He understood to perfection the possibilities of all stringed instruments. This is proved by his solos for the violin and for the violoncello without bass. One of the greatest violinists told me once that he had seen nothing more perfect for learning to be a good violinist, and could suggest nothing better to anyone eager to learn, than the said violin solos without bass. Cellists know that this latter statement is equally true for them the Bach Suites are a monument to be studied, learned by heart, communed with, and made a part of oneself. At least, this is the way they sound when Casals plays them, and his interpretation is a classic in the best sense of the word. He first began to study these incomparable works in 1889, which sounds a long time ago. He has been playing them ever since, and by constantly renewing his powerful grasp of their inherent intellectual and emotional qualities he makes it seem as if the music were growing out of his very finger-tips. His cello must know them as well as he does, and one wonders if, when left on its own in a corner, it would not suddenly begin to play them unaided, like the piano in Berlioz`s anecdote about the Conservatoire examinations. Certainly there is a binding together, in these performances, of man and instrument that we may never again witness to so full an extent. It is the melodic turns that Casals handles so deftly, stressing the important notes slightly, or dwelling on notes essential to the underlying harmony, so that we have the impression of polyphony where there is in fact monody. Of course, multiple-stopping is used from time to time, though by no means as frequently as in the violin sonatas, and it is little short of miraculous that whatever happens, Casals always produces tone of impeccable quality. The transfer has been expertly done, and the booklet are excellently presented.

Visual and Aural Condition

The record is in Near mint condition there are no stylus scratches or scuffs. The labels are bright and clean with no stickers or writing, as spindle marks. The record as not been cleaned with any mechanical or chemical cleaners.  I only use an anti- static cloth prior to checking its condition under halogen lights or bright sunshine. Then played completely through to check its aural condition, it plays excellent apart from some odd light tics. Please remember that this is a 54 year old very rare vinyl record and rarely comes up for auction.

The Sleeve

The heavy card sleeve and insert are in excellent condition. There are no tears, splits, writing or stickers. Some light shelf wear and the 16 page booklet as a few yellow spots

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THESE ARE LONG PLAYING VINYL RECORDS THEY ARE NOT CDS

The images I've provided are of the actual item you are bidding on - these are not stock images or images I've taken from other sites.

Viewed under 4 x 50 w Halogen lights or in direct sunlight this clearly shows any imperfections, any visual faults are noted and described, such as scratches, scuffs or spindle marks.

Though due to the very nature of vinyl there is always the inherent tick which is due sometimes to imperfection in the vinyl or debris in the track which a deep clean should remove. Though all records and the record decks/systems they are played on are all different, the stylus, pick up, amplifier and speakers all play a part in the perceived sound that we hear. If your requirements are for a clinical digital reproduced sound, please buy the CD not this vinyl record!

But if you are dissatisfied with the record for any reason I offer a full no quibble refund if you will return the record with its original packaging, at your own expense via a trackable method within fourteen days of receipt. PLEASE CONTACT ME PRIOR TO RETURNING ANY ITEM via ebay ask the seller a question.

   Grading Score

    Record – Sleeve

   89          83

Mint

(95 is the highest figure given as no records are perfect, not even new and sealed ones)

85-94 Near Mint

Almost flawless; At 85 only the lightest scuff marks to the record and only slight wear to the cover....... Above 86 and up to 94, there should be fewer to no marks on the playing surface of the record or wear to the cover.

75-84 Excellent

Below 84, down to 80, there will be progressively more marking, but this will only be very light and superficial. The cover may have light ring wear, small edge creasing and or discolouration...... A few more surface marks will be seen at 75-79, obvious ring wear, creasing to cover, slight tears, some laminate lift.  Remains of price labels or sticky tape evident to the cover.

65-74 Very Good

I do not list, unless it is a much sought item. There will be more obvious marks to the record including heavier scuffs and / or stylus scratches that may sound, the cover may have more obvious creasing, ring wear or laminate lift or worse tears.

Below 64 Poor

I do not list!!
