Coldplay : X & Y 1A / 1B / 1C / 1D 1st Press 2005

This genuine first press plays with 'as new' audio across all four sides, the playback is faultless.  The records in all probability have never been played before and the sonic quality is as high end as you can get.  The records are visually very impressive as you would expect and are pressed on 180g vinyl.

The gatefold is in perfect Mint condition as as are inner sleeves and the slipcase cover is also in superb shape with barely any wear.  It is still encased by the original shrink-wrap except for the opening edge and has no splits anywhere.  There is no poster with this copy.

Visual description

The vinyls are in great condition with a lovely glossy finish and there are no scratches to be seen.  S1 does have a small heat mark which no doubt was caused during the manufacture plus a hairline type mark but they have no affect on the stunning audio.  Aside from that they are immaculate and as stated I doubt they have ever been played.  S4 has a large amount of vinyl 'flecking' around the spindle hole which backs up this theory.  The labels are unmarked and have no spindle wear either.

Play grading

The intro on 'Square One' plays with perfect clarity and Martin's opening vocal is the same.  As the volume increases the playback is so strong and the depth and power of Berryman's bass is a real standout.  It continues to play with a sonic quality that can only be described 'as new' and that is so obvious on the quiet vocal section at the end.  A stunning Mint start to the album, no need for a minus!

The opening quiet section on 'What If' plays beautifully with no intrusion, just a couple of dust ticks, and as the volume picks up there is no let up in quality.  This track again shows that this vinyl has very likely never been played before such is the clarity of the audio on offer here.  From start to finish it is Mint in every way.

'White Shadows' ends the side with sublime quality throughout - sonically the audio is STUNNING!  Nothing more to add it is another Mint track.

'Fix You' on S2 perfect.  Simple as!  The opening quiet passage is 'as new' and the remainder is just as impressive.  There is no intrusion, just sublime clarity and definition from the first note to the last.  Mint

Both 'Talk' and 'X & Y' play to the same high end standard with no interference and Mint is again deserved.

All the tracks on S3 more than keep up this exemplary standard and whilst trying hard not to sound repetitive the clarity, depth and warmth of the audio is as strong as it was when first released just over 17 years ago.  'Speed Of Sound', 'A Message' and 'Low' grade as Mint another easy decision :-)

S4 begins with a stunning version of 'The Hardest Part' that is 'as new' from start to finish.  An example of the clarity across the entire album is on the first extended note on 'Swallowed By The Sea' which has not even a single dust tick.  The opening vocal is just as impressive and the rest of the track is also flawless.  'Twisted Logic' again has literally no interference and the final 'hidden track' 'Til Kingdom Come' ends this double album in fine style with sublime Mint audio throughout.  Not bad for a largely acoustic track!

In summary this first pressing is 'as new' and having played every track in full I am confident in saying that.  There is no interference and the clarity, depth and power of the audio is out of this world!  As stated I doubt if this album has ever been played before and that is certainly reflected in the quality of the audio.  If you want a Mint version then this is the one to own!  A FINAL UPGRADE album in every way.

The Slipcase, Gatefold & Inner Sleeves

The slipcase is in great condition and is still enclosed within the original shrink-wrap apart from around the the opening edge of course.  You would think that the 'box' would have been squashed / compressed over time but this one is in perfect shape.  The three wide edges are in superb condition (in the shrink) and the opening edges have again retained their shape with only a small number of minor 'rubs' and just very minor wear on the corners - very very minor!

The gatefold can accurately be described 'as new' it is that good.  It is so clean and the edges and spine have no wear at all - actually I have just noticed one tiny 'speck' on the spine but that does not detract from its stunning visual quality!  The two thick card inners are also in perfect condition.

Play tested on my Rega P2 Turntable / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers

The records have been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
