Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. Here's the most exploratory and psychedelic outing of Dr. John's career, a one-of-a-kind fusion of New Orleans Mardi Gras R&B and voodoo psyched-out mysticism. Great rasping, bluesy vocals, soulful zombied backup singers, and eerie melodies on flute, sax, and clarinet, as well as odd Middle Eastern-like chanting and mandolin runs. It's got the setting of a strange religious ritual, but the mood is far more joyous than solemn.
Gris-Gris was the first album by keyboardist & guitarist Dr. John, The Night Tripper. Mac Rebennack (Dr. John) was an experienced and very sough-after session musician in New Orleans. Of course drugs were everywhere, and it culminated with some problems with the authorities and the subsequent move out of town, aiming for Los Angeles. In Los Angeles he teamed with another group of New Orleans musician renegades, in 1965, surviving with them, playing on numerous rock records. He decided to create the Pseudonym, Dr. John, to front the band he was setting up, based on the swampy sounds of his hometown. He was not however the one whom he intended to incarnate this persona, he wanted Ronnie Barron to do it, but when the manager advised him not to do so, Mac had no other choice but to be re-born in that character himself. Originally his name had a subtitle, The Night Tripper, which didn't last for a long time. Dr. John's first Lp was recorded in Gold Star Studios, Los Angeles. The time he got to record was achieved when he used the time that was supposedly booked for Sonny & Cher (for whom he played as a session musician). So, Dr. John's Lp was released on Atco Records, who was part of the famous Atlantic Records (released, even though the directors hated it). Best Tracks - "Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya", "Danse Kalinda Ba Doom", "Mama Roux", "Jump Sturdy" and "I Walk On Guilded Splinters". Those soulful, swampy, voodoo textures really get into the listeners brain. It may take at least five days to stop thinking about the backing-vocals of the first two songs. It is really a truthfully a classic of its age. A mystical mix of Cajun, beatnik and shaman. Dr. John The Night Trippers Gris-Gris is an album that needs to be experienced and still can send shivers over 40 years later... and if you only know 'the good doctor' from fancy suits and Katrina Benefits you will be in for a shock when the LP starts spinning. W hat comes out is a boiling cauldron called "Gris-Gris." From the first track, appropriately titled "Gris-Gris Gumbo," we are treated to the bubbling horns and strings over a rumbling drum while The Night Tripper introduces himself as a Voodoo Priest, ready to cure all ills with what's in his sack. The echoing background vocals set the late night mood and when the song sounds as if it is disappearing into the gloom, a trumpet will squeal or drum will bang to remind that you haven't transcended... yet. If ever there was a song (full album really) to put on with the lights off and candles lit this is it. You will transported directly into the swamps. The second track doesn't even contain any vocals from The Night Tripper and instead sets the mood over violin strings chanting and rhythmic drumbeat. After the introduction of "Gris-Gris Gumbo," "Danse Kalinda Ba Doom" makes it clear this is no ordinary audio outing. "Mama Roux" takes the topics of and 2nd lines but lays it over a funky beat that grooves and wouldn't have been out of place in a hip club at the time. Perhaps the most straightforward track here, it assures listeners they haven't lost their minds after the first few tracks. With its heavy bass and smoky chants "Danse Fambeaux" brings the strange southern dance forward as bells chime and layers of singing encompasses. "Croker Courtbullion" leaves you feeling like you drank one of the Dr.'s potions as vocals swirl and flutes soothe only to be roughed up by underlying tension of a harpsichord. The instrumentation all over the album is hypnotic, it can become impossible to tell which is exactly what when immersed in the song and that is a sign of some great overall production and a nod to the arraignments of Harold Battiste . "Jump Sturdy" struts her swampy stuff right down St. Charles Avenue . With her funky walk crazy attitude and banjo strums "Jump Sturdy" isn't afraid to mix a bit of soulful stew into the Creole jambalaya of an album. To close Dr. John and his crew present their best tune which escorts the listener out of the murky bayou and into the great beyond, "I Walk On Guilded Splinters." Hand drums swirling background vocals that slither from speaker to speaker, this track sums it all up and opens the ears for even more as the potentate Doctor casts spells with his playing and singing. There is something otherworldly contained in this track, its that same vibe that permeates all of Gris-Gris, making it an album you cannot miss.A
