A REALLY GREAT CLASSIC FROM FRED ASTAIRE

PUTTING ON THE RITZ   b/w  CRAZY FEET

Fred Astaire - Puttin' On The Ritz, 1930

Although Irving Berlin's 1930 song was originally written for vaudevillian Harry Richman, it has become indelibly associated with Astaire, who also recorded it for Columbia in 1930. Sixteen years later he would record the song once more, performing it in the film Blue Skies. This song is an excellent example of the equivocal nature of popular culture during the Depression. While the lyrics speak of the "well-to-do" and seem to celebrate decadence, the lines "watch them spend their last two bits/puttin' on that Ritz" suggest the despair and nihilism of the era.

The original version of Berlin's song included references to the then-popular fad of flashily-dressed but poor black Harlemites parading up and down Lennox Avenue, "Spending ev'ry dime / For a wonderful time".  Note that the "spangled gowns" are misfits, and are worn by "High Browns from down the levee", a "High Brown" referring? to a light-skinned negro, and "down the levee" referring to their supposed genesis in Mississippi.

BLUE SKIES (1946) was the second of two musicals Astaire made with Bing Crosby, the first being HOLIDAY INN (1942). This film also featured a thin plot involving competition for the girl (Joan Caulfield, this time) and loads of songs by Irving Berlin.  And once again, Bing sang "White Christmas" (and other Berlin standards like "Blue Skies" and "How Deep is the Ocean?").  But the dancing was all Astaire.  His "Heat Wave" number with Olga San Juan and his "Puttin' on the Ritz" solo  are among the highlights of the film.  Disappointed by what he perceived to be the general decline of his career however, after BLUE SKIES, Fred announced his retirement from motion pictures.
