This album, along with St. Louis to Liverpool and Fresh Berry's, constitutes part of Chuck Berry's lost Chess years, and, for most listeners, a broader "lost period" for Berry. At the time, his music was never more widely copied and covered, courtesy of the British invasion bands streaming into the U.S. in person and on record, yet he couldn't chart a single or get top bookings in the U.S. Chuck Berry In London has its feet planted in 1965, offering harder blues-based numbers like "Why Should We End This Way" and "I Got a Booking," both influenced by Big Bill Broonzy (the latter, in particular, is Berry's rewrite of "Key to the Highway"), along with lean hot-rockers like "St. Louis Blues" and the loud, sneering "I Want to Be Your Driver." The latter was a clear influence on Bob Dylan's "Obviously Five Believers," and demonstrates that Berry was still an influence on rock & roll as late as 1965. Therein lies the beauty of this record — it shows Berry evolving as a singer and guitar player, exploring sides of his music and persona in a very contemporary way, and not at all awkwardly. He does revert back to past formula here and there — "His Daughter Caroline" is the kind of sentimental ballad that Berry used to insert between his classic rock & roll on his early albums, in attempt to break the mood and vary the pacing. "Jamaica Farewell" and the Spanish-flavored "The Song of My Love" are more diverting and successful.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)            Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP; HOWEVER, WE ARE UNABLE TO GRADE IT NEAR MINT DUE TO MINOR FLAWS LISTED BELOW; WE GRADE THIS COVER AS VG++(A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has 2 (two) small cutout hole punched IN THE LABEL AREA. This affects the record, which also has 2 small cutout holes in the label area.

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 (front side) and 4 (back side)

-        The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam

-         Cover has two corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)
