Forty-one years ago, Christopher Cross set sail on a musical journey that has continued unabated to the present day. His self-titled debut was released in the waning days of December 1979, spinning off three smash hit singles in 1980 (“Ride Like the Wind,” the Pop No. 1 “Sailing,” and AC chart-topper “Never Be the Same”) and netting a whopping five Grammy Awards. Cross became the first artist in the awards’ history to pick up Record, Album, and Song of the Year along with Best New Artist.
Christopher Cross is one of the most influential musician of the 80’s. His eponymous 1979 debut album was responsible for shaping the sound of pop music in the following decade. We can hear traces of his defining sound in many of the hit songs that came after. His debut was magnificent, his influence was significant, but his career ended like a firework, burning bright and beautiful, then faded into the void of the night.
Grammy’s Album of The Year in 1981, famously beat Pink Floyd’s legendary “The Wall” for that year’s accolade. Cross made Grammy history by winning all four general fields of the Grammy awards: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist, all in the same year. To this day, no other artist can repeat that feat. The album had four Top 20 hits from this album, including “Ride Like the Wind” (featuring backing vocals by Michael McDonald), “Sailing”, “Never Be the Same”, and “Say You’ll Be Mine” (featuring backing vocals by Nicolette Larson). Both Don Henley and J.D. Souther also provide backing vocals on the album. The album received 5 platinum in the US for selling 5,000,000 copies.
Undoubtedly the most famous song of the album was “Sailing”, the quintessential soft-rock track. VH1 named this song as the greatest “softsational soft rock” of all time. The song “Sailing” reached the number #1 spot of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in 1980 and received 3 Grammy’s for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Arrangement of the Year. It catapulted the new artist Christopher Cross into a household name and placed his name in the history of pop music. “Christopher Cross” was widely recognized as one of the most influential soft rock albums of the decade.
ou can’t make an 80’s playlist without one of the song from this album. If soft-rock music of the decade was trademarked, it would bear the brand of this album. Its musical arrangements and its vocal harmonization is an exquisite artistic achievement. If you’re planning on a road trip, you’d want to put this album in your car’s music player.
Ride Like the Wind” is a great fast-paced track. I just love the electric piano arrangement in “Never Be The Same”. I think it might be the root of all 80’s sitcoms’ theme songs. “The Light Is On” is a very cool romantic tune. And of course, the crème de la crème, “Sailing”. What a beautiful song.
