Rare original issue of this gallery piece from Christian Marclay. Conceptual artist recording, issued in Switzerland in the 80's, part of an installation at Shedhalle Galleries, Zurich.

Some info on the release:  Rare original issue, released in Switzerland sometime in the 80's on the great RecRec label (Negativland, Bob Ostertag, Red Crayola with Art and Language, Fred Frith, Tom Cora, etc.). From June 4th through July 16th 1989 the floor of one of the Shedhalle galleries, Zurich, was covered with 3500 copies of a record titled FOOTSTEPS. During the six weeks of the installation, people were invited to walk on the records-willingly or not, they had to step on them to reach the adjacent galleries where other sculptures were exhibited. The one-sided record, containing the sounds of footsteps, was recorded in December 1988 in the deserted hallways of the Clocktower (N.Y.), and in the studios of Harmonic Ranch (N.Y.), where Keiko Uenishi's tap dancing was mixed in. During the gallery installation the work could be looked at, stepped on and walked through, but the recording was never heard, its content merely suggested by its title. Over the course of six weeks, more than 1500 visitors walked over the fragile floor, contributing to the through July 16th 1989 the floor of one of the Shedhalle galleries, Zurich, was covered with 3500 copies of a final composition by altering the records' surface with dirt and scratched. At the end of the exhibition, the records, which were attached to the floor with double-sided tape, were removed. The record sold here is one of them. When played, the footmark scratches and recorded footsteps blend in a final aleatory composition of rhythmic patterns, with as many variations as there are records. One thousand of these records have been made available, apart from a special edition of one hundred copies signed and numbered. Dedicated to the memory of Fred Astaire. Mainly can be seen as an art object and not as a vinyl that's aimed at your listening pleasure(keep in mind that, as people have stepped on it, with result lots of dirt and scratches, but all copies are like this).

California-born, Switzerland-bred and New York-based turntablist Christian Marclay (1955) "composes", performs and improvises using phonograph records. He has applied John Cage's indeterminism and, in general, Dadaism's provocative principles of aesthetic demystification, to the civilization of recorded music. His music can be just a mechanism for letting a record evolve a sound over time (typically, by having people somehow degrade its sound), or it can be a distorted collage of other people's music. Has worked with people like Guenther Mueller, Otomo Yoshihide, Alan Licht, Lee Renaldo, DJ Olive, William Hooker, Ulrich Krieger.

Condition: Vinyl lies in good condition, this is an artist recording, or to be more precise an art object which was stepped on, so please don't expect anything outside of that concept (see picture).
