Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Minor and faint handling traces being critical on quite revealing labels.

Brief Info: ‘Cher’ is the seventh and original title for this 1971 album. Later renamed ‘Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves’ after the success of the single of the same name, but this still failed to break into the UK album charts. However, it proved more successful elsewhere. This is a lovely, and quite scarce original UK MCA album that at this time was pressed by Decca – so top sound quality is assured from a very little played copy. I have always loved the aforementioned single, indeed I bought a copy myself as a schoolboy in 1971. There are no ‘bad’ songs on this album, indeed it has some superb tracks and I enjoyed this one immensely. UK copies will not be easy to find better, the very wear-prone cover has little wear but the card is gently wavy. The record plays with brilliant sound and that famous, even classic single, never sounded better.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and includes the heavy-duty original Decca-style polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: Dark and unlaminated with a heavy thick Decca-pressed record inside for over 43 years is a sure-fire recipe for ringwear. Against the odds, this has avoided it, but the card as mild waving. Any real wear or blemishes to the surface of either side minimal, small and faint. A small few light creases, little else.

Top Edge: Very thin, straight with hardly any trace of wear.

Bottom Edge: As above but with a smallish rub on the right corner area.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with patchy, fairly mild compression, the ends are pinched in manufacture. All text unworn and well centred.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing. Fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this quite unforgiving dark, early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This still attractive item should please many collectors, the waving is really only gentle.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an early heavy-duty Decca-style polylined inner with two immaculate window circles and very clear, fresh lining. Minimal ageing or seam adhesive darkening, barely creased and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed – a typical high-quality Decca-pressed record, that even at this time of the oil shortage refused compromise on the very high manufacturing standards they always set. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional MCA (Decca) record. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, this is Cher at here very best as far as I am concerned. Less commercial than she later became with some terrific songs. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. That wonderful single never sounded better and will blow away scratchy old singles.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
