Description

CHARLIE JOHNSON
& His Paradise Band

Charlie Johnson was one of those bandleaders who didn't make a big mark themselves, but did provide fertile ground for musicians to learn their craft, develop a style and launch from. He had a combo called the Paradise Ten who played at Small's Paraside' between 1925-1935, and this record is right in the midst of that.

At the time of this recording the group had Charlie Johnson on piano, Leonard David on trumpet, Jimmy Harrison on trombone, Ben Whittet on clarinet, Edgar Samson on alto sax, Ben Waters on clarinet, Bobby Johnson on banjo, Cyrus St. Clair on tuba, and George Stafford on drums.

The songs are "Walk That Thing" and "The Boy In The Boat (The Rock)" and are both from a session in NYC on September 19, 1928
