THE COMPLETE CANDID RECORDINGS OF CHARLES MINGUS - MOSAIC MR4-111. THIS BEAUTIFUL MOSAIC SET WAS LIMITED TO A QUICKLY SOLD OUT PRESSING OF 7,500 ALBUMS. THIS COPY IS NUMBER 1288. ALL FOUR DISCS ARE NEAR MINT AS ARE THE LABELS, BOX AND BOOKLET. THE VINYL APPEARS TO BE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.
Out of a storied and very busy recording career, many critics and other savvy listeners have ranked these small group Candid sessions at the top, or certainly near the top, of Mingus’ output. Undoubtedly the exquisite presence of Eric Dolphy contributes to this broad agreement. Mingus was always exploring how freedom for the soloist could lead to extraordinary compositional execution and Dolphy was the perfect jazzman in this respect. Also featuring other fine musicians like original trumpet stylists Ted Curson & Lonnie Hillyer; tenor titan Booker Ervin; long-time Mingus associates Dannie Richmond (a vastly underrated rhythm machine) and Jimmy Knepper (a truly unique trombone voice). Other major participants include Tommy Flanagan, Roy Eldridge, Charles McPherson, Papa Jo Jones and others. /\ Recorded in 1960 and featuring five tracks that were previously unissued before this set. Original sessions were released on Candid as Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus (9005); Mingus (9021); Newport Rebels – The Jazz Artists Guild (9022) and The Jazz Life (9019). The Candid label itself is an interesting story, created out of a perceived need for artistic integrity and political expression. || Some compositions include: Folk Forms, No.1 / Original Faubus Fables / What Love / All The Things You Could Be By Now If Sigmund Freud’s Wife Was Your Mother / Mysterious Blues / R & R / Reincarnation of a Lovebird / Lock’em Up / Body & Soul. || Like many great composer/arrangers, Mingus seemed to never tire of certain themes – be they borrowed or of his own invention.
