Label/Format: Island – Original pink i format with smooth finish.

Label Conditions/Info: As can be clearly seen on my picture, side one has a large round ‘Promotional Copy; sticker. I am a 100 per cent honest seller, and I have some doubt if this is genuine as I think I can see traces of writing through it, but this very faint. This opinion reinforced by the fact the cover has a neat name written inside, and, again being honest, I do not know the history of this particular copy, it was bought from a customer who decided to thin out a few albums and it was bought from another seller some time ago. It appears well established and I promise this is exactly as I purchased this scarce album quite recently. I really cannot be fairer in this opinion. What is for certain, pink label copies of this album are scarce being one of the final new albums pressed to include this design prior to the more familiar change to the pink rim format. Both are clean and still quite fresh and attractive with light+, but very fine spindle marks. These have little visibility and are seen more under light. I have not had many of these before and in terms of sound quality, this my finest yet as a true original. An album with quiet passages and for some reason, it tends to attract scratches from considerable usage in most cases for those who bought it on release. An album that has to be offered for sure and a really strong example if the label sticker is not an issue. These do not come along often or much better.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 144 grams. a more typical and very solid weight for this first pressed record.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: This is a very scarce record, make no mistake, only after time did this man become more of a household name and most of his albums are seen as later pressings. Few copies of this record were issed on the original full pink i format, most early editions seen on the pink rim label. Issued at the very end of the full pink label run, this is one of the most elusive Island albums ever made as an original and it’s availability was limited and brief. Of the tiny few of these I have personally seen, most have been in pretty poor playing and visual conditions. This one offers the best sound I have personally heard from a ‘pink’, some have been noisy or spoilt by marks. Again, I cannot vouch for the label sticker authenticity, in fact I have strong doubts, but it’s there and little I can do about it. For sure, I am not letting a sticker stop me offering this lovely piece, it affects not one iota the beauty of the sound or rarity. Certainly one worthy of high consideration, the album itself is pretty common as it later proved immensely popular and got this man very established, but somewhat after the pink label has all but disappeared. Do not underestimate just how rare this one is on this, the last original pink Island album made.

Brief Info: With the rarity of the pink Island first pressing, many collectors are more than happy to settle for a Pink Rim pressing. But for the serious Island and Cat Stevens collector, nothing else will do than a first pressed pink i original. For me the ultimate Cat Stevens album, a record of incredible beauty and including several outstanding and memorable songs. A man at his musical peak, no music lover could fail to be moved by this beautiful music. The man in supreme voice and including the most perfect production with a full backing. Packaged too in gorgeous cover, this record proves beyond any doubt what an exceptional singer-songwriter this man is and every record collection should include this truly memorable record. The copy on offer is a very nice one, most of any blemishes are cosmetic – I have mentioned my doubts over the label sticker already, and the cover has a neat name inside, but a great deal else to fault. Pink rim and later pressings are common, but a full pink not so. Not one you will see often and only one in several thousand will be a true first.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: but with a neat name inside, any opinion on that purely subjective. so make your own mind up. A gatefold format with front and back lamination, the inside is heavily textured with a matt surface. This is thick and heavily made with the very wide spine format. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group (seen on the bottom right of the inside cover when viewed vertically as pictured). Later covers had smooth insides and were printed by other companies, some even abroad, also the spines were much thinner.

Lamination – Front & Back: Clean, still fresh with fine shine and clarity. With practically full adhesion (a fine sliver on the top edge of the back apart), and with most any creasing very fine and faint. This superb artwork can be enjoyed to near maximum advantage with any dulling also light, gentle rim impression and dulling on the back, mostly near the top edge is seen with angled viewing. With the thicker original records, this is so hard to avoid totally.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Beautifully dark and textured and looking impressive. A little natural creasing to the right of the spine fold that again is a natural occurrence with thick spine covers. The aforementioned name is on the colour bowl near the cover bottom, this being neat and really causes minimal visual impact, in fact I did not even initially notice it myself. The ‘Day’ imprint still clear and unworn, if small, but an important factor along with the texturing for an original. This fragile surface has little to fault with any chips, marks or creases tiny and faint.

Top Edges: Thick and straight, also still very smooth with little to fault.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear at all, both guaranteed untrimmed. The front is closed, so the record enters on the back. Slight ‘curl’ to the back’s ends being critical, as laminate tends to contract over the years.

Spine and Text: Very wide and thick, solid and straight with barely any compression. All the large text is pristine perfect and unworn under the solid, clear and unpeeled laminate that remains ultra smooth to the touch. Folded a fraction off-square, so the edges are not quite parallel towards the far right.

Corners: Minimal tip rubbing and all retain very fine to excellent (or better) shape.

Cover Summary: A lovely example of this now 43+-year-old cover – with superb artwork and quality construction – and actually laminated too, this will prove quite hard to find much better. Island were a company that used laminate sparingly, but did so here and it gives it an almost de luxe finish and look. I feel sure this will please many collectors if the name is not an issue.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain white, unlined solid inner, in terms of real wear, little. Just mildly aged with the usual discolouration. No creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: with any surface marks very fine and whispy as seen more critically under bright angled light. A very clean record that retains a lovely shine and is quite heavily pressed. No penetrating scratches, whispy surface traces are usually the result of dry cloth cleaning and totally harmless. First pressings always seem to carry that extra tiny detail and information the audiophile listener wants and this copy really delivers. For looks and sound, this has to be my best ‘pink’ yet, lacking the usual surface sound and practically devoid of any pops or clicks. That never to be dismissed lightly on what proved to eventually be a very popular record. A factor is, the early copies were more likely to have been subjected to heavy tracking and less sympathetic record players, and this album does not tolerate them well. This one has avoided such issues.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic original and very late pink Island record plays mostly even above it’s visual grading with very little to fault. A very elusive first press that offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – a genuine hi-fi standard recording, the man himself could be performing within your room. Any surface sounds are minimal and faint. The odd sporadic light tick or faint crackle trace are nigh-on impossible to avoid totally on this fragile recording – I have to remind again, this is a 43-year-old record with practically no loud passages to obscure the odd minor blemish, but this has little and it will take a near remarkable example to better it significantly. If clinical silence is demanded, well the digital format will offer exactly that, but will not deliver the detail and sheer realism this first pressed record offers. Any minor blemishes are a price worth paying for owning the genuine article – this is way Stevens and Samwell-Smith wanted this evergreen classic to sound. This record I feel sure has not been played that many times and has not pressing issues. Issued at a time when many were still using dated mono equipment, this early example would so often have been used on the like. A special note on the very difficult final last song, a short one but immensely hard to find that plays cleanly. There is a vocal cresendo with a host of singers on one brief part, this in most cases breaks up and distorts, here NOT the case and without doubt, this is one of the few I have heard that keeps this very difficult part precise and in full focus. Many, if not most fans and Island collectors will enjoy this evergreen classic, do not underestimate how difficult it is to fine as an original and this type of very fine condition. If the visual issues e.g. label sticker and name on cover are acceptable, this copy will take some beating and the sound especially so. It merits strong recommendation.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
