About

Despite limited critical and commercial success upon release, Hal Ashby’s 1971 movie, Harold and Maude, went on to achieve cult status amongst audiences and within the film industry. Its unusual mix of dark humour, romance, and existential drama is beautifully enhanced by the collection of Cat’s songs that were used for the soundtrack. All but two of the songs used were from either Mona Bone Jakon or Tea for the Tillerman. Both “Don’t Be Shy” and “If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out” were written specifically for the film.
It is widely recognised that the dynamic emotional range of Cat’s songs and their quirky charm have contributed immensely to the movie’s enduring appeal.
In that the vast majority of the songs were already on pre-existing albums, a complete soundtrack for Harold and Maude was not released at the time. A Japanese version did come out in 1972, however, it was more of a compilation album which included five songs that weren’t used for the film and omitted the two songs written specifically for it. A full official soundtrack was only released in 2007 and was limited to 2,500 vinyl copies. It came with a 7? single of “If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out” and “Don’t Be Shy”, and an extensive booklet containing accounts and interviews about the making of the film.

Harold and Maude is a 1971 American romantic black comedy drama directed by Hal Ashby and released by Paramount Pictures. It incorporates elements of dark humor and existentialist drama. The plot revolves around the exploits of a young man named Harold Chasen (Bud Cort) who is intrigued with death. Harold drifts away from the life that his detached mother (Vivian Pickles) prescribes for him, and slowly develops a strong friendship, and eventually a romantic relationship, with a 79-year-old woman named Maude (Ruth Gordon) who teaches Harold about living life to its fullest and that life is the most precious gift of all.

The film was based on a screenplay written by Colin Higgins and published as a novel in 1971. Filming locations in the San Francisco Bay Area included both Holy Cross Cemetery and Golden Gate National Cemetery, and the ruins of the Sutro Baths.

Critically and commercially unsuccessful when originally released, the film developed a cult following and in 1983 began making a profit.[1][2] The film is ranked number 45 on the American Film Institute's list of 100 Funniest Movies of all Time and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1997, for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant".[3] The Criterion Collection special-edition Blu-ray and DVD were released June 12, 2012

Er ist einer der Kultfilme, die in den 70er Jahren in den Kinos zu sehen waren: „Harold And Maude“!
Nach einer Romanvorlage von Colin Higgins enstand unter der Regie von Hal Ashby ein rührender Film über den Teenager Harold und seiner Beziehung zu der 79-jährigen Maude. Die Geschichte ist ein Film voller schwarzem Humor, typisch britisch und doch auch mit beißender Kritik an den etablierten Gesellschaftswerten..........................................
Die Musik dazu stammte von keinem geringeren als Cat Stevens, doch obwohl sie populär war und nach wie vor ist, gab es doch nie eine Platte von diesem Soundtrack. Das wurde nun nachgeholt, nach rund 37 Jahren! Es ist aber nicht einfach nur eine Platte mit ein paar netten Songs, es ist ein Gesamtkunstwerk! Die Aufmachung ist allemal etwas Besonderes: Das dicke Klappcover beherbergt neben der sauber gepressten 180 g-LP in gefütterter Innenhülle eine Bonussingle mit der unveröffentlichten Demoversion von „Dont Be Shy“ und einer Alternativversion von „If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out“ und zusätzlich noch eine Pergamenthülle. Darin verbirgt sich das opulente 36-seitige Booklet mit tollen Bildern zum Film und vielen Linernotes sowie zwei (!!) Poster.......................
Grandiose Songs wie „Where Do the Children Play?“, „Trouble“ oder „On The Road To Find Out“ wurden von Cat Stevens ausgewählt, sie stammten aus den Erfolgsalben „Mona Bone Jakon“ und „Tea For The Tillerman“, andere wurden eigens für diesen Film von ihm komponiert (und später teilweise auf der Compilation „Footsteps In The Dark“ veröffentlicht).
