Label/Format/Info: Ode with matt smooth surfaces. This includes the A&M distribution credits on the rims. The record appears black with normal viewing, but is pressed on red translucent vinyl (seen under light).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with just a small, ultra faint spindle trace each side. This gorgeous record appears hardly even played with sound to match.

Rarity: Moderate, this massively acclaimed album sold in considerable numbers. Condition always a factor and this is little short of sensational with a record appearing barely touched or used, and the cover looking little short of as-made. Such copies on this popular classic are far less easily found. Early red translucent pressings are also very collectable and rarer. Translucent means light will pass through an object, but no detail can be seen. This record appears like a standard black pressing, but when held to a bright light source (e.g. a light bulb), the eerie red glow appears which I have tried to photograph. The effect is best seen in a darkened room with the record held near the bulb.

Brief Info: ‘Tapestry’ was the second album by the world famous singer-songwriter Carole King. Issued in 1971 to considerable acclaim, this caught the record buying public mood perfectly and sold in vast quantities. In American alone it has surpassed 10 million sold units and earned ‘Diamond’ status. Sales were also strong here in the UK, but it failed to reach No 1, peaking at No. 4. Most songs will be familiar to music fans with several being covered by other well-known artists. A beautiful, timeless issue that, like the lady herself, exude class. This barely played early UK copy on Ode does it maximum justice and was a joy to play. It was also issued on the A&M mustard colour label – but I feel this album is best on Ode as it was originally issued in the United States. This red translucent copy is very cleanly pressed and the cover is simply stunning. Cover-protection from new means this has hardly even been handled and to date, is the very best example I have ever seen, that too with a thicker and heavier than average pressed copy inside. For fans of this legendary artist, this classic album is unmissable.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR MINT: a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press, includes the plain white inner sleeve with ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text.

Cover Front: Archive standard and stunning with any blemishes less than minuscule. For a matt cover this considerable age, it would be almost an insult to mention anything. The classic picture of the young Carole with cat will rarely, if ever be seen fresh or better than this.

Cover Back: Amazing again, look like it just came of the printing press.

Top Edges: Straight, unfaded or worn.

Bottom Edge: Virtually the same, any rub traces so faint they barely even register.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Still very sharp with any thickening traces tiny and light. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Immaculate again, solid, straight with no compression, the white surface totally unaged and super-clean. The text totally unworn and neat as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light with no creasing and near mint shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: An amazingly preserved classic cover, and one that will remain in my memory when gone. Be assured, few surface like this now and being dark, this is quite a wear-prone item. This beautiful item should please all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white unlined inner with ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text. Minimal creasing with all edges naturally intact. The only hint of age being mild darkening of the seam area adhesive that few inners fail to acquire (at best).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better – one side has dulling from the inner sleeve seen critically under light. A common trait for a record that has been left undisturbed or removed for many years. This is moderately light and has no affect on play whatsoever. The original owner of this probably played it once and stored it away which for this album, was a rare thing to do. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. As stated, a translucent pressing, the red glow is seen under a bright light source, but appears black in normal light. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any usage traces few, very light and faint, also as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark and critically acclaimed album that many still regard as the finest ever by a female popular music singer, plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early UK translucent pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been carefully handled and the cover expertly stored within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
