Description VG++. Shaded Dog-era, original U.S. 1st pressing, released in 1964. RCA Victor "Soria" Series 3-LP Stereo box set of Bizet’s "Carmen." Complete performance. (RCA LDS 6164, Indiana pressing plant, stampers: side 1 8S, side 2 12S, side 3 6S, side 4 4S, side 5 19S, side 6 4S.)
The recording was made in Vienna. The sound on this set is SPECTACULAR!
Featured performers are: Leontyne Price, Franco Corelli, Robert Merrill, Mirella Freni with Herbert Von Karajan conducting the Vienna Philharmonic, The Vienna State Opera Chorus and the Vienna Boys Choir.
Part of RCA's "Soria" series, the 3-LP box set includes a 4-color, 12” x 12”, 68-page perfect bound book printed in Italy, featuring the full libretto and many, many photos and color illustrations; and an insert advertising other releases in the series.
The hinged box is made of thick cardboard and covered in heavy, textured yellow paper, with de-bossed lettering and an illustration of Carmen glued on.
The set includes the original, printed, poly-lined, audiophile-grade inner sleeves to hold the LPs, stamped with an "Inspected by" stamp.
The stereo recording is on the prestigious TAS list. P roduced by the editors of The Absolute Sound magazine, this is a list of the best audiophile recordings ever made.
Condition & Grading Before listing any record for sale I personally clean it using a VPI HW17f professional record cleaning machine, a Milty ZeroStat 3 anti-static gun and a carbon fiber brush.
My overall grade for the set is VG++. Keep in mind: this is a 50-year old set of records which contains approximately 3 hours of music and multiple aspects. Coming up with 1 grade for the whole package is complicated. I’ve done my best to be fair, keeping these factors in mind.
Play grade overall is VG++, with occasional "pops" and occasional light surface noise on some quiet passages.
I played the whole set listening through headphones and there is nothing wrong with these records in any major way at all.
Visually, the records are all bright and shiny with a lot of gloss. Under a bright light there are scuffs and hairlines but, for me as a listener, it is the play grade that is important.
Box is VG+ and shows minor shelf wear and some fingerprint smudges.
Book is NM.
Insert is NM.
