I COMPAGNI

Turin in the late nineteenth century. The workers of a textile industry after an accident at work are becoming aware of their condition and ask for a reduction in working hours. The protest failed, but sudden comes from Genoa a "stirrer" socialist, Professor Sinigaglia, who becomes their guide ideological organizing an indefinite general strike. The arrival of a trainload of strikebreakers provokes heated scuffles in which one of the workers looses his life. The strike continues and the resistance of the masters falters, but the workers are exhausted, and reflect to go back to work. The intervention of police and military, sanctions the failure of the revolt. The workers go back at the factory under the weight of defeat, but with new perspectives for the future.

"I COMPAGNI" comes after decades of light, carefree Italian comedy, away from the problems and miseries of everyday life after the war. 

With "I COMPAGNI" Monicelli shows once more his own, alive and genuine desire to draw near to the collective stories, to the histories of group, realizing a film somehow "choral", trying to gather in depth the inside dynamics to a whole people and the relationships that are founded in an ampler historical-social dimension among these. The context is not for Monicelli a mere background, but it becomes the fundamental nucleus, the central fulcrum around which it rotates the job on the characters, essentially of the losers, that nevertheless don't accept to keep on being excluded by the scene of the History.

As already mentioned by Monicelli, the film aroused much controversy upon its release, "particularly warm atmosphere of those early sixties (the events of June-July 1960 in Genoa, strikes at Fiat in 1962, the '" opening to the left " in 1963, not to mention that the same film was premiered at its 35 th Congress of the socialist Party), definitely made ??difficult any attempt at critical distancing from the film, of a more lucid and detached"
Even the presentation at the Venice Film Festival and its theatrical release, proved the film a failure in the public and critics (though, earned an Oscar nomination for Best Story and Screenplay).

But after many years, the lack of attention to the film seems the effect of an Italy absorbed by the optimism of a carefree economic boom and certainly does not diminish the value of a work that stands the test of time so well that it is considered, by its author, as a point of arrival.
 I COMPAGNI takes place in Turin, but in this city were filmed only a few shots (the yard of a house in Via Verdi), most shots were instead made ??at Savigliano and Cuneo. The exterior of the building are at Fossano interiors in a factory in Zagreb.

Light paper cover in EX condition, corners quite sharp, no bumps or wear, thin seams and spine in excellent condition, no ring wear on front/back. Light crease near top left corner, tiny number "R 159" stamped near top seam.

Vinyl :   EX+  

The lustre vinyl looks played with care, with just a few minimal rubs on both sides, absolutely not affecting playing, with a few occasional episodes of light background noise.

Catalogue/Label :

EP CAM CEP 45-105 original 1st and only italian pressing. Labels in perfect condition.

GRADING CODE

Grading is VISUAL, under a bright light. 

        NM  (Near Mint): Record has been opened, and probably played, but is in impeccable condition. I do not use "mint".

EX   (Excellent): Has signs of use or storage, but still considered top collection quality. Jackets may display some very light wear; vinyl may have a few light sleeve marks only visible in the highest light. Sound will full and clear, with little if any noise (NOTE, some records are just pressed poorly).

VG+ (Very Good Plus): Still a great copy but has a bit more wear. Vinyl may have some light scuffs or scratches, but nothing deep. Jacket may have some ringwear or seamwear. Sound should be great, with minimal if any noise.

VG  Very Good): A great play copy but clearly used. Vinyl will display many hairline scuffs or scratches, but will play with a tolerable amount of noise. Jacket may have splits and wear but will not be falling apart.

VG-(Very Good Minus): A used or worn copy, that has not been taken good care of. Vinyl will have many scuffs or scratches, but play through enjoyably despite audible background noise. Covers will have tears, splits, writing, or other issues. 

 G  Fair, Poor: A very rough copy. Will play through without skipping unless otherwise noted, although records of this grade are sold AS-IS.
