Carl Perkins' first attempt at an album of new material in a decade is surprisingly successful, and one of the better records to come out of the early days of the rock & roll revival. Cut during the summer of 1969, it sort of follows the lead of Elvis Presley's 1968 comeback special, presenting Perkins doing blues ("Baby, What You Want Me to Do"), rock & roll ("C.C. Rider," "Brown Eyed Handsome Man"), and a few originals such as "Soul Beat" which, if they weren't distinguished, also do no harm to his reputation. There were a few touches that the album might've done well without, like the organ that occasionally crops up on some of the arrangements, and a runaway performance on the wah-wah pedal during one song, but the bulk of this was some of the better LP work up to this point in the career of an artist who was otherwise not especially known for his strong LPs. Among the real highlights is the obscurity "Superfool," written by a friend of Perkins; "Champagne Illinois," a collaboration between Perkins and Bob Dylan that grew out of the sessions for the latter's Nashville Skyline; Ronnie Self's "A Lion in the Jungle"; Perkins' powerful and touching "Power of My Soul"; and Buddy Holly's "I'm Gonna Set My Foot Down." On Top was subsequently deleted and, with a new cover and the deletion of a couple of songs, reissued on the budget Harmony Records line under the title Brown Eyed Handsome Man.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some ring wear; On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 5.

-         Cover shows some yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant).

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
