CARL MCVOY: TOOTSIE/YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE – LONDON 45 RPM

A 1957 recording by Jerry Lee Lewis’ older cousin, Carl McVoy – the person who inspired Jerry Lee to take up the piano and the rockabilly scene.  McVoy sings vocals and plays piano; he made just 4 singles – this was his first, a rocked-up version of earlier standards that will appeal to enthusiasts of early rock and rockabilly.

These two tracks were the very first issued by a short-lived new label, Hi Records of Memphis, in December 1957.  The disc had some success but distributors were slow to pay their bills and, in a bid to recoup production costs, Hi Records sold the recording rights (and McVoy’s contract) to Sun Records’ legendary Sam Phillips, who issued the identical pressing on his Phillips International label in June 1958.  Within a year London Records bought the US and UK distribution rights – they issued it as a 78 and 45, but the 45 is now the one most sought after.

Disc made in England with a triangular-centre London label No. 45-HLU 8617 which states “Recorded by HI, Memphis”.  The vinyl has a few surface marks, nothing drastic – no deep scratches, but it still plays fantastically.  Carl McVoy sings with instrumental accompaniment; the track lengths are – Tootsie 2.31; You Are My Sunshine 2.16.
