Legendary original English Decca label very first pressing of the classic second Caravan LP with misprinted album title!

In 1970 the Decca Art Department was responsible for the misprinting of the album title on the back cover and the spine of this sleeve. Caravan provided their own cover artwork and Decca were to add the typesetting and their logos for the back cover and spine. However, Decca didn't get it quite right (they wrote 'Had To' instead of 'Could') the proof reader missed it and the album was released as If I Had To Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You. The sleeve was immediately re-printed with the correct title, but the first batch of albums (and this is one of them) was released in the incorrect sleeve. Reputedly only 500 copies were EVER made with this error, making it one of the rarest and most desireable of all CARAVAN collectables! This amazingly great CARAVAN album is very rare as an original UK 1st Press in its own right, but to be offered a UK 1st press copy complete with one of the very few misprinted 1st Press sleeves is simply....

Offered for sale is an Excellent near mint copy of Caravan's magnificent and timeless second album - "If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You". It is an original FIRST PRESSING on the Decca SKL-5052. Matrix nos:-ZAL-9752.P-2W / ZAL-9753-P-4W. Made in England 1970.
This is the legendary and MEGA RARE version with the album title MISPRINTED on the rear sleeve and spine, (please see photos). The title reads- "If I Had To Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You", only the initial very first pressing of 500 copies featured this sleeve misprint, before the mistake was corrected on all later issues, consequently, this version is now incredibly hard to find, particularly in such fine condition.

1970 Original UK STEREO pressing on the DARK BLUE DECCA Label! This is the TRUE ORIGINAL 1st PRESS complete with 'MISPRINTED' title on the rear sleeve and spine!! Reputedly only 500 copies were EVER MADE!! Thus making it one of the RAREST on the Decca label and amongst the RAREST of ALL the late early 70's BRITISH psych / prog albums released during this golden era!! This excellent condition original copy is from my own collection, owned by myself for 40 years, breaks my heart to sell it!!

You simply don't see this album offered for sale EVER and rarely, if ever, in such excellent clean condition anywhere!

CARAVAN were the other half of the WILDE FLOWERS - the SOFT MACHINE being the other - that originated in Canterbury, Kent. The band itself was originally formed in early 1968 by guitarist/vocalist Pye HASTINGS, keyboardist Dave SINCLAIR, bassist/vocalist Richard SINCLAIR (later of HATFIELD & THE NORTH, NATIONAL HEALTH, etc.), and drummer Richard COUGHLAN. All four members of CARAVAN were, at one time or another, in that band. They were a leading exponent of what became known as "the Canterbury sound".

The band's 1968 self-titled debut was a hybrid of jazz and psychedelia. Things became serious with the album on offer here, the groups' magnificent second album, "If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You", released in 1970 on Decca records, this landmark album would mark the start of their classic period. The material is a very original mixture of styles including classical, jazz, and traditional English influences. For those who love the Cantebury style of Prog will simply adore this album to death. This marks CARAVAN's second album and a masterpiece in progressive rock history. This album contains that drooling organ we have all come to love along with the excellent musicianship and songwriting of CARAVAN. Of course this album contains the classic 14 min epic track "For Richard" which explores some pretty trippy yet progressive ground. Musically this album is one of the high points of Caravan's career: great tunes, arrangements and playing, equal or even better than "Grey & Pink". The performance and writing is utterly flawless. Whether it's long instrumental jam sections as found in As I Feel I Die and For Richard Medley, whimsical pop tracks If I Could Do It All Over Again... and Hello Hello or feature length pieces And I Wish I Were Stoned and With An Ear To The Ground... Richard and David Sinclair's playing and writing brings Caravan's sound to it's very peak all over this record with Pye Hastings vocals and guitar adding to the sound in many great ways. This is a true masterpiece and a must-hear record for any fan of the Canterbury Scene, contains some of the finest examples of what this set of musicians were really capable of. This fabulous album is a near perfect blend between late 60s psychedelia and complex 70's progressive rock with that intoxicating Canterbury sound.

Quite simply one of the greatest English classical progressive rock albums EVER released. Brilliant second album, and my personal favourite by the UK ‘Canterbury’ progsters. Superb and melodic keyboard driven rock with wonderful long instrumental passages, this is Caravan at their very best and can be enjoyed to the maximum via this truly immaculate record, the perfect and definitive way to enjoy their music. A typically solidly-pressed Decca album with beautiful sound, this copy without any doubt has barely been played and will prove near impossible to find better. A fantastic example of this stone cold CLASSIC and a milestone in this great group's history.

Both Sides Play Magnificently To A High Standard

(The vinyl surfaces on this original 1970 Decca first pressing still retain their original full shiny deep gloss. A beautiful visual copy that is ultra clean with lovely shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy only very lightly played over the past 40 years and one that should please most collectors. Under a strong light you can see a few very light inaudible superficial hairlines/light surface marks only. Nothing major, and nothing to affect the playing of this great lp. As is the case with these wonderful Decca 60s heavy vinyl pressings both sides play superbly well delivering fantastic POWERFUL audio throughout with great clear sound clarity with only occasional touches of surface very minor crackle in some quiet parts, between tracks and on run in grooves. A strong EX+ near MINT condition DECCA 1st pressing of this great progressive rock LP. I very much doubt if you can find a significantly better original UK copy of this legendary and increasingly rare Caravan masterpiece)

(Both deep blue and silver print Decca labels are immaculate, beautifully bright, sharp and virtually unmarked with just a few very fine and faint spindle traces. No stickers, no writing, no tears. Pretty perfect set of labels)

(Great front laminated 1st PRESS MISPRINT sleeve 'Printed in England by Robert Stace' is graded at EXCELLENT (+), very crisp and clean with only a few tiny flaws. A few light lamination creases on the front near the lower right and edges, slight impression wear from where the record has sat for these past 40 years. The seams are all very straight with hardly any shelfwear to speak of. The spine has one tiny scuff on the V of over (please see pics), otherwise the text is all fully and completely legible. The predominantly white rear is very clean with just some typical age toning and the number 76 is neatly written in biro near the bottom seam. Overall a lovely copy of this fabulous and iconic Caravan psychedelic sleeve)

Decca Records 1970 SKL 5052 Stereo! UK 1st press. Laminated front sleeve. Made in England by Robert Stace. A beautiful original 1st pressing LP release of this magnificent British progressive album. Without question this is one of the FINEST albums from the golden era of late 60's early 70's rock music.

After releasing their eponymous debut album in 1968, their label Verve decided to close down their rock and pop division. As such, the band had to wait two years before finally becoming signed to Decca, and releasing this, their incredible second album. Their first album was fun listening, and certainly quite underrated, but now Caravan were poised to compose some of the best and most iconic albums to come out of the Canterbury scene.

Caravan's second album is full of psych-rock, progressive organ-rock and flowing mindblowing jamming. The band are capable of delivering a wide variety of moods and styles, and perhaps more successfully than that, a wide variety of heavily syncopated rhythms. The nature of their music just invites the listener to groove to it, yet it carries a sense of intelligent, structured song-writing that is sometimes missing on psychedelic records.

The shorter numbers are are beautiful, cool songs with a great grasp of ever changing time signatures (goes without saying for Caravan) and even catchier melodies than the longer pieces. What those extended songs do however, is create moods for us to jam along to, and sometimes it's fantastic that these excursions last for a long time. These guys seem to always have a talent for changing the feel of the music just before the moment where it starts to get boring.

Highlights for me include 'As I Feel I Die', probably the most rocking song on the album, with a very hot organ solo; 'With An Ear To The Ground You Can Make It', which has lots of cool interludes that carry you somewhere afar; and of course the 'For Richard...' suite. This piece starts atmospherically before blasting you with the best riff on the album and then going through various jazz-noodles before closing with some Uriah Heep style hard rock. The entire album is amazing and of an exceptionally high quality. Considering this album was originally released in 1970, it still sounds astonishingly fresh.

The title track was a surprise hit single at the time, but it is not really representative of the band, or indeed the album. The distinctive vocals and Canterbury keyboards are already present, especially on tracks like "And I wish I were stoned/Don't worry". Caravan found their direction on this album, and subsequent releases explored a similar vein. The track "For Richard (etc.)" first appeared on this album. It has of course gone on to become arguably the band's best known and most popular song, appearing on a plethora of live albums, and being performed (I believe) at every gig they have done since. There is a strong jazz influence on parts of the track, but that never overpowers the prevailing prog structure.

It was only because there were so many other innovative and exciting bands around at the same time, that Caravan never went on to achieve the success they deserved, and that this album undoubtedly warranted. They did enjoy a level of success with subsequent albums such as "In the Land of Grey and Pink", but this album remains something of a hidden diamond.

For those who love the Cantebury style of Prog will simply adore this album to death. This marks CARAVAN's second album and a masterpiece in progressive rock history. This album contains that drooling organ we have all come to love along with the excellent musicianship and songwriting of CARAVAN. Of course this album contains the classic 14 min epic track "For Richard" which explores some pretty trippy yet fully realized progressive ground.

This LP is the impossibly RARE UK DECCA ORIGINAL 1st PRESS with MISPRINTED ALBUM TITLE on the SPINE and BACK COVER. It says "If I HAD TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN, I'D DO IT ALL OVER YOU"!! Instead of IF I COULD DO IT...Which is what you will see on 99.99% of sleeves!! And correct SKL 5052 number...later copies have SKL-R- 5052 (please see the pictures).

In my oppinion this is among THE best Caravan albums, and in fact, one of my favourite albums of all time. Every song provides such an impact.  Overall, this is an amazing album that captures Caravan at their most defining state. An essential addition to any music collection. This is absolutely essential if you enjoy progressive / Canterbury music. Yet another masterpiece! Absolutely brilliant album!!

This ORIGINAL 1970 UK DECCA 1ST PRESS album is a 'MUST HAVE' for CARAVAN collectors as well as BRITISH 70's PROG ROCK fans.
