Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with minimal faint spindle traces, this copy appears hardly played. The record itself plays beautifully, a challenging record with some quiet passages, but this up there with the finest for audio quality I have heard.

Brief Info: Brilliant second album, and my personal favourite by the UK ‘Canterbury’ progsters. Superb and melodic keyboard driven rock with wonderful long instrumental breaks, this is Caravan at their very best and can be enjoyed to the maximum via this very clean copy that plays beautifully, the perfect and definitive way to enjoy their music. A typically solidly-pressed Decca album with great sound and production. Even that ultra delicate ending to side one plays impressively, often this area found scratched as arms were sometimes lifted prematurely thinking the record had finished. The cover attractive with any ageing gentle and light on the unprotected back. This one has the wider manufacture trim on the right with the final word ‘you’ not clipped into the margin.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single format that has a Clarifoil laminated front, this covers all closed edges and ends on the back via the spine. Printed in England by Robert Stace. This one has the wider crop to right edge. There are two distinct versions of this early cover, one with the trim touching the ‘u’ on the final word ‘you’ on the front bottom right. The other (as per this one) has a wider trim – I have had both versions several times over time.

Lamination & Front: Lovely artwork seen to near maximum advantage under shiny, fresh and clear laminate. Minimal hint of dulling, even under light and no lifting. A moderate laminate crease near the top right edge, elsewhere, very few and light.

Cover Back: A back that is more often seen very grubby and ringworn. Any grubbiness is little, gentle and light, very slight small hints of light toning seen right up close, but little else to fault on an unforgiving back that overall has fared well.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both perfect: very straight, totally unscuffed, smooth, unchipped or worn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any wear, also guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Even when viewed end-on, barely any thickening or burring. This one, as stated further up, has the wider trim to the text, these I have found a little harder to find. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal hint of any compression, a tiny crinkle at the very top. The text all perfect and quite well centred under the solid clear laminate.

Corners: All corners are very impressive with little to fault and have minimum excellent shape with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: Overall, an attractive example with only gently hint of age, it will please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a little creasing to one corner and no edge splits or repairs. Some darkening on the usual seam adhesive areas as usual, both window circles crisp and undamaged, the polylining very clear and fresh. A tiny nick on the top opening, but look hard. This one date-coded 4-72 (April 1972).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): with only ultra fine wispy surface traces seen with scrutiny under bright angled light, no penetrating stylus marks at all. An impressive visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and solidly pressed on the usual top-quality Decca vinyl. Viewed in normal room light, this looks fantastic. A copy played little with due care on better quality equipment. The lovely clean sound quality is testament to that. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilaus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This prog-classic plays even above high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. A real hi-fi Decca recording that will make any worthy system sound fantastic. Minimal traces of any surface sound, even the quiet passages play great including that incredibly challenging delicate piano ending to side one. Many could have been caught-out with the gentle ending that stops and starts two or three times before finally ending. Premature lifting of the arm and then dropping again when the sound returned often means ruinous scratches on this ultra delicate area. This has no issues at all and so typical of Decca, this is a fantastic clean pressing, always one of the most reliable and best manufacturers. Few available examples will outperform this impressive copy I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played modestly, and with due care. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
