From my own vast private collection gathered over last 45+ years ...these mostly from 1973 - 1978 I had my own Record Store here in Northern California in the 1970's and 80's -and bringing in wonderfully vibrant and amazing Progressive Rock Imports was a top specialty and priority - I was (still am) so nuts about this music that I had 3 different evolving weekly Radio Programs dedicated to it over 20 years - and loved nothing more than turning folks on to these bands and immersing myself and my audience in these exotic sounds. Now it is finally time for me to pass them on - my hardest LPs to part with, some 8 boxes of which I shall be listing throughout this Spring. Many of the leading progenitors of the 1st progressive era, but quite a few more obscure but no less amazing artists of the period. . *Sadly I am NOT FAST at listing and can am lucky to get around 50 up at a time, but they will keep on coming (as I pause between series, to focus on top level packing and immediate shipping) so keep checking back.
This leads me to the subject of "collecting" purchases for combined shipping with further purchases, which some ask for. I am happy to save LPs that are purchased within SAME Auction Series period (7 Days from 1st won auction) IF YOU ASK Me to. I MUST receive payment within 7 days of initial purchase. If you are in another country, wishing to have won/purchased LPs HELD ASIDE longer, for future (within 30 days maximum) combined purchase shipping, your note on your PayPal payment to HOLD items for combined shipping later will guarantee their being saved aside for your further bidding. When you state that you are done, your invoice will be revised to reflect complete, correct shipping discount at that time. If you DO NOT ASK me to hold, item will Ship within 24 hours. CHECK MY FEEDBACK, I am ALWAYS 100% RELIABLE on this. International bidders note that any package over 4 Lbs. (usually 5 to 6 LPs or more) MUST ship by PRIORITY MAIL INTERNATIONAL. US Post Office no longer ships above that weight at the lower, slower 1st Class International rate. . The vinyl here is in uniformly spectacular condition (Most being EX+ to NM) always extremely carefully handled. Some of the covers have minor issues - a small handful have significant issues, but the great majority are in VG+ to EX+ condition. Almost everything offered here is Original 1st Press - Full Details for each given in Description below. .

Simply a tour-de-force of apex Canterbury Prog, of great sophistication, intricate subtleties and stunning power.
*I was invited to attend a private LIVE-IN-STUDIO recording and broadcast on Caravan's 1974 1st USA tour, when they played this LP program almost in its entirety - along with a utterly devastating "For Richard" and a few others. This was Sunday, Nov. 10, 1974 at THE RECORD PLANT Recording Studio in Sausalito (just over the Golden Gate from San Francisco) that was infamously broadcast live on KSAN FM Radio.
(The Broadcast tape still exists, from an extraordinarily well-mixed board. CDs seem to be floating about, I now hear, with most of the performance. Grab one, I know I will !)
They had performed at the intimate KEYSTONE in Berkeley the night before and were scheduled to play again on Sunday, where I was guest-listed - but the band suddenly opted instead for the live-in-studio broadcast? opportunity and I became one of less than a dozen "audience" behind the glass during the performance. It was staggering - both in sheer power as well as how well they were able to pull off all of the complex changes and amazing intricacies of the album without overdubs. Having already seen Hendrix, Zappa, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, et al, at that time, this still ranks as one of the top 5 performances I have ever attended. Sheer brilliance - and the album itself is no less. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Caravan's FOR GIRLS WHO GROW PLUMP IN THE NIGHT is what British Canterbury Progressive Rock dreams are made of: ...outstanding complex instrumentations mixed with virtuoistic playing, divinely inspired improvisational interplay, seriously mind-blowing composition, melody lines that dig deep into the psyche, a bit of obscure dark humor and - the smoking splendor of the Davoli synthesizer (that's Dave Sinclair's singular hybrid keyboard).
The album's controvertial cover, a pregnant woman, would be much more controversial if Caravan's original idea, of a naked pregnant woman, had been accepted, but their label refused the idea, of course.
Memory Lain, Hugh / Headloss is a strong opener for the album, with nice blend of prog rock and psychedelia, the trademark of Canterbury sound. The song starts fast paced, with some jazz hints and embarks in an excellent brass, flute, haunting organ and guitar instrumental overture in the end of the first part of the song. The second part of the song becomes more directly rock oriented, with heavy rhythm and swirling synthesizer. The vocal harmonies are great also. The end of the song has a nice instrumental part, with highlight to the electric viola and guitar interplay.
The next song is Hoedown, melody oriented - and excellent. First, the song is in 7/8, though the rhythm will please anyone. The song is fast-paced and inspired in early 20th century moves and a real Hoedown. The song has excellent viola, marimba and vocal work. Caravan managed to put everybody to dance in 7/8, an incredible feat.
Surprise, Surprise arrives on the lighter and whimsical side. The song has excellent bass and vocal melodies. The chorus is catchy as well and the musical arrangements are beautiful, including a nice viola solo.
C'Thlu is perfectly placed in the album, changing the mood to dark, menacing and supernatural. The intro of the song is very heavy, with a powerfully spooky bass and drums riff. The song changes for the bridge and chorus, with guitar and viola, with a more upbeat feel, returning to the somber riffs on further verses. The instrumental interlude has stunning guitar work and synthesizer; all-in-all the closest Caravan ever approached to hard-rock.
The Dog, The Dog, He's At it Again is a song strong implicit sexual references in the lyrics, again showing the humorous vein of the band, with the musical arrangements are exactly what you would not expect in a song with such lyrics. The song has a far lighter mood than C'Thlu, with variations, complex moves, beautiful guitar, piano and viola interplay, beautiful vocal melody and harmonies and a superb synthesizer solo.
Be All Right / Chance Of A Lifetime is another "harder" song, with great guitar, drums and electric viola work. a sudden turn changes the song completely to an acoustic piece, with acoustic guitar, viola and congas. Then there is a truly superb electric viola solo over excellent bass and drums.
L'auberge du Sanglier / A Hunting We shall go / Pengola / Backwards / A hunting we shall go (reprise) is the longest and most thoroughly prog song of the album - and the crowning (10 minutes+) moment, with many diverse parts, moods, rhythms, melodies and textures. The song starts out almost classical, with great acoustic guitar and viola before becoming very proggy, with a superb instrumental section, including heavy organ riffs, superb bass and viola and guitar solos. The epic piece finally winds into a becalmed atmosphere, with tight, seductive synthesizer and guitar solos and beautiful overall interplay to the end.
GREAT Sound on this 1st Press vinyl of a not-to-be-missed Canterbury classic.
Disc inside original poly-lined inner sleeve. Album kept in a protective, poly outer-sleeve. .
