This is the band's 2nd release in 1973, but it's the first with their new lineup, which is; Lee Dorman (Iron Butterfly) on Bass, Rod Evans (Deep Purple) on Vocals, Rhino (Iron Butterfly) on Guitars, Guille Garcia on Congas/Timbales/Percussion, Marty Rodriguez on Drums & Backing Vocals, and Reese Wynans on Electric & Acoustic Pianos.
The 1st release from Captain Beyond was heralded as a new style for progressive rock in the early 70s - they called it Space Rock. This follow-up album is a little different, but does not stray too far from the original concept. Once again, it works more often than it fails.
There are 8 tracks on this album. All of the material is quality work - no filler here. Rhino's guitar work is exceptional, he always knows what (and how much) to play to make the song work. Lee and Marty work seamlessly to create a sturdy framework for the other players to work within yet never becomes obtrusive. Rod's vocal work is perfectly tailored for this style of music. He also understands the concept of "less is more" and never overdoes his part. The tasteful Latin percussion work of Guille Garcia on some of the tracks reminds me of early Santana (the band) - maybe around the time Abraxas was released. A Great Second Album for Captain Beyond.

Remastered Reissue of the Progressive Rock Super-group's Second Album, originally released in 1973. Translucent Red Colored Vinyl LP in Heavy Gatefold Jacket. Includes an 8.5x11 paper insert Family tree of Captain Beyond.
