CAPTAIN BEEFHEART~MIRROR MAN~ORIG 1971 FACTORY SEALED DIE-CUT LP~FRANK ZAPPA

Product Description

ANOTHER LP FROM THE AMAZING COLLECTION OF 10,000+ LPs THAT WE ARE OVERJOYED TO HAVE PURCHASED!
THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE ALBUMS IN THIS COLLECTION HAD BEEN HORDED OVER A PERIOD OF 30 YEARS STARTING IN THE MID-1980s AND CONTINUING UP THROUGH 2014!
TO SAY THAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER WAS OBSESSED WITH COLLECTING WOULD BE AN UNDERSTATEMENT.

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band* ?? Mirror Man
Buddah Records ?? BDS 5077

EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL FACTORY SEALED COPY OF THIS AMAZING ALBUM FROM 1971 - 45 YEARS AGO!!
GATEFOLD COVER IS THE ORIGINAL DIE-CUT VERSION WITH THE INSIDE ARTWORK SHOWING THROUGH THE OPENING.
COVER HAS A SAW CUT IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER.
COVER CONDITION IS NEAR MINT EXCEPT FOR A FOLD BELOW THE SAW CUT.
VINYL SHOULD BE MINT.

Recorded in November 1967 (an odd misprint on the sleeve claims it was recorded in 1965, when the band barely existed), the four lengthy tracks on Mirror Man are even more simplistic and primal than those on Strictly Personal. All four are worthwhile, but the key tracks are "Tarotplane Blues," a free-form jam in which Beefheart jumbles together the lyrics of at least half a dozen blues standards into a stream-of-consciousness ramble (adding musette and harmonica for good measure) as the Magic Band vamps on a slide guitar-based, two-chord groove for over 19 minutes, and the similarly expansive "Mirror Man," one of the key tracks of Beefheart's entire career. Probably the catchiest tune Beefheart ever wrote, "Mirror Man" has an almost funky, hip-swaying groove, and there's a playful lightness to the way Beefheart chants the simplistic lyrics that prefigures the flights of fancy on Trout Mask Replica and Lick My Decals off, Baby. The remaining two tracks, "25th Century Quaker" and "Kandy Korn," are less essential but interesting enough.

Most releases of this work, if not all, declare "These performances were recorded one night in Los Angeles in 1965". This is incorrect. The works are part of various material recorded over weeks in 1967 for an aborted double-album follow-up to "Safe As Milk" (known broadly as the 'Brown Wrapper' project). These works and the releases "Strictly Personal" and "It Comes To You In A Plain Brown Wrapper" are inter-connected.

This 'Mirror Man' recording is the first time some of the work officially surfaced, 4 years later as the 5th album - and why the band remains titled as "His Magic Band". Errors exist in the Artist credits: Alex St. Clair has had 'Snouffer' added to his alias, Handley is shown as 'Handsley' & Semens as 'Simmons'.

The image included with the auction is a picture of the actual item.
When paying with PayPal, we will only ship parcels to the buyer's registered PayPal address.
DUE TO OVERSEAS POSTAGE SLOWDOWNS, ALL FOREIGN CUSTOMERS MUST AGREE TO WAIT 2 MONTHS BEFORE FILING A LOST PACKAGE CLAIM.
Shipping and handling fees are non-refundable.
PLEASE NOTE: We have set our shipping prices to cover costs on an average basis. You may be charged slightly more - or less - than the actual cost of postage; Priority postage varies according to destination, records and jackets vary in weight, all of which makes it impossible to set an exact "correct" price for all customers, especially internationally. We ship all LP's in new (unused) custom LP mailers. We pack records with filler pads, placing the disc in an inner sleeve outside the cover to prevent seam splitting in transit. Part of our postage fee covers the cost of the mailer and pads (which currently costs us up to a dollar per).

RECORD GRADING POLICY
MINT = like new or near new with only one or two small insignificant defects, a 9 or better on a 1-10 scale
EXCELLENT = Would be Near Mint, except for a couple of light hairlines or scuffs, which do not affect play
VG++ = still a very nice record with all or nearly all of its original gloss but may have a few more light, surface marks, hairlines, needle tracks or the like which should not materially affect play
VG+ = a nice, but used record that may have a series of light scuffs or scratches. It probably plays with a few pops, but has no serious problems.
VG = a well-used record that still should sound OK when played, but may have moderate surface noise, pops, etc.
VG- = a very well-worn record that plays through without skipping, but will do until a better copy comes along.
Good = not actually good at all but probably will play through but with much in the way of surface noise, pops, crackles, etc. Still, will have no cracks, chips or the like
Fair = you'?re getting this record just to own but not to play
Poor = the sky's the limit, generally I will discard a record this bad (and sell the cover, jacket or sleeve alone) unless the label holds some particular interest
