A&M Records SP-12510
Original 1984 issue MONO EP
FIRST PRESSING PROMO

VINYL is NEAR MINT
Gleaming Gloss Vinyl looks virtually unplayed - immaculate, with no marks of any kind, and absolutely no signs of use. Labels are Pristine both sides. *I did, of course test-play this one, all the way through - and it sounds glorious. Loud, Clear and Full; totally free of any background noise, crackle or distortion.
.
COVER is NEAR MINT
Crisp, clean, vibrant cover with no wear, creases, bends, writing, soil or other issues. (Gold Promo stamp on back cover, u.r. corner). All edges straight, all corners sharp. Seams and spine are 100% intact with no wear or splits. Spine titles are crystal clear and completely legible.

STRICT CONSERVATIVE GOLDMINE GRADING

The 5 earliest recordings from The Captain and the Magic Band!
All from 1966 - here, in their Original MONO Mastered form.

12” 33rpm, 5-Track EP

4 of these tracks were previously issued by A&M in 1966, only as 45rpm 7” (A & B sides) on 2 singles:
“Diddy Wah Diddy” b/w “Who Do You Think You're Fooling” - and - “Moonchild” b/w “Frying Pan”.
The 5th: “Here I am, I always Am”, also recorded in 1966, was never released at all, languishing for decades in A&M's vaults.

Manufactured under license from A&M Records Ltd.
Pressed by Electrosound Group Midwest, Inc.
MATRIX NUMBERS (etched) SIDE ONE: A&M SP 012510-A   ES1    EMW
SIDE TWO: A&M SP 012510-B   ES1    EMW
Printed on back cover (lower left): “This record is monophonic to reproduce the original quality of these recordings.”

**This promo has the small letter “B” at bottom left of the labels (as can be seen in the photos), identifying it as the issue with the original MONO mixes.
(The STEREO mixes are on almost identical labels, but with the letter “R” printed in place of the “B”.)

*This is very important to note, as A&M had also printed "STEREO" on ALL (both the MONO and STEREO issues) the labels.
…AND, exasperatingly, A&M also included that “…This Record is monophonic to reproduce…” line on back covers of both the MONO and the STEREO issues.

BOTTOM LINE:
• If the label has the pressing plant ID: B at bottom left, you have the original 1966 MONO mixes, pressed by Electrosound Group Midwest, Inc., Shelbyville IN. The very few PROMO issues are always the “B” labeled, True Mono pressing.
• If the label has  the pressing plant ID: R at bottom left instead, then it is a 1984 reworked Stereo mix pressed by RCA Records Pressing Plant, Indianapolis IN.

You can verify all of this at DISCOGS (as well as the interesting MONARCH Record Mfg. connection with the Electrosound pressing plant).
The Original 1966 Masters were MONO only. _____________________________________________________________
Beefheart’s tough, gritty and powerful DIDDY WAH DIDDY was absolutely explosive and became a big hit on the West Coast in 1966.
(As a 14 year old kid, freshly transplanted that year from the dusty Southern California inlands nowhere-burg of San Dimas, to the mystical Redwoods of Northern California Big Sur, I was knocked right on my ass when I first heard DIDDY WAH DIDDY, late at night, courtesy of Wolfman Jack and 50,000 watts clear channel XERB AM radio, which was the only station at the time with a signal that could penetrate the mountains and the dense forest - and that, only in the wee hours).
As fate would have it though, an East Coast group, “The Remains”, also recorded and released the song around the same time.

RESULT: Beefheart rising BIG on the West Coast charts. The Remains land BIG on the East Coast charts. …then the Remains got on as the opening act for the 1966 USA Beatles (last) tour and with that sudden notoriety, ultimately blew Beefheart’s far superior version into oblivion. …Both versions are solid, no dis to the Remains on that account, but their adolescent snarl on the song simply could not match the fire, committed power and urgency that Beefheart’s raw growling, pounding, prowling rampage was infused with. A&M quickly drops Beefheart, as 'uncommercial' - and the 5th track from the sessions “Here I am, I always Am” - slated for Beefheart’s next A&M single - gets left in the vault - and The Captain hits the road.

OK ...so now the Zig Zag Wanderer does the Dropout Boogie, plying the winding Yellow Brick Road and as quick as you can say Abba Zaba, Sure ’Nuff ’N Yes I Do, there is a meeting with the BUDDAH (Records), where Captain and Magic Band are Safe as Milk in a new home making Electricity. They also begin making history .. including some more dubious acquaintance with the bumpy road and its denizens, with a Strictly Personal stop at BLUE THUMB Records - a label organized specifically to liberate and extricate Beefheart from the idiotsinkcrazies of his snarled Buddah contract; eventually back to the desert, where he re-connects with his old Lancaster pal, school-mate and mutual musical delinquent FRANK ZAPPA, where the road gets StRaiGHt. But you probably know all about what came next.

Here though, you get in on Beefheart’s auspicious obscure beginnings - NOT to be missed.

Oh, and when the record arrives and you play it for the 1st time …be sure to play it Loud.
It will knock you on your ass; but the next time it bursts from your speakers, you won’t be able to sit down, or stand still.
