Label Conditions: Both practically as made: very clean and highly attractive with just a couple of ultra light and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 124 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Scarce: one of the more elusive Can albums. Even within the progressive rock genre, these German bands only had limited appeal and were far too experimental and weird for many. Now highly sort-after and in high demand - and so they shoud be - they are amongst the very best progressive albums ever issued. This copy is one of the first ever pressed confirmed by the matrixes, mothers and stampers below.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Still for me, the greatest of the ‘Krautrock’ pioneers, an affectionate term for German progressive rock from the late 60s and early 70s. The cover states this is the second Can album but not number two. I suppose that means this record was composed specially for movie themes. This is another remarkable work to follow the legendary ‘Monster Movie’ debut and another captivating classic. The main theme is the lengthy ‘Mother Sky’ clocking in at 14.5 minutes, a mastertrack, featuring Damo Suzuki on vocals and one of their finest ever tracks. Czukay’s basslines on this track rattle the speakers with a beautiful rich ‘twang’ and the usual intensity is maintained throughout. But there is not a bad (Sound)track on this brilliant album, it features their most famous line-up, also original vocalist Malcolm Mooney on two songs, they simply never made a bad album - never be put off by this album’s title, this is pure vintage Can sounding menacing and groundbreaking as all their other UA albums were. This was recorded in 1969 at the Inner Space Studios. A remarkable band and set, their influence is still strongly felt even today, any fan of this legendary band will love this album and copy - its a real beauty and one of the eariest ever pressed and issued.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Quite High.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++, the front even better, that alone could pass for new. A single format with a laminated front that wraps around the spine and on to the back for abour quarter-of-an-inch and of course, includes the original artwork. For some reason, the reissuses and CD versions included different graphics and the celloloid original graphic seems to be exclusive to the early vinyl originals. Printed and made in England.

Lamination & Front: The front is in truly immaculate condition with lovely clear and very shiny laminate. This remains fully adhered with no blistering and retains a lovely rich glass-like sheen with no traces of any dulling or fiction rubs. No marks and even surface traces under light are elusive as are creases - a couple of very fine surface hairline types only. This scarce original front cover artwork will rarely be found better.

Cover Back: Predominately white and unprotected, few will avoid some grubbiness or marks and this does have a little. Light handling traces around the edges and the faintest of faint sticker residue traces near the top right corner area but look very hard to see any. This has NOT pulled or damaged the cover’s surface at all. No creasing or ringmarks and the end of laminate line on the spine edge is neat and free of grime. A splendid back overall and given its fast approaching forty, it has stood the test of time very well indeed and like the front, will prove hard to find much better.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with minimal compression, a light hairline crease near the centre. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate.

Corners: All retain fine shape and show little wear at all, slight darkening near the top right back.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this elusive early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors and always great to see the original artwork.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) and possibly undergraded at even that, another fantastic record that could almost pass for new. A supreme visual copy that is super clean, with a lovely shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy barely played on all the evidence with no noteworthy marks or blemishes at all. Visually a super record that should please all collectors.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent Kruatrock classic plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly challenging album. Brilliantly produced with a real intense sound, ‘Mother Sky’ remains one of my favourite Can tracks ever and here sounds simply amazing. Czykay’s basslines still give me that rare tingle factor when played on clean vinyl and this this copy does it full justice. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult if not near impossible to find better and is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
