Label/Format: United Artists, original UK matt format with a faint hint of texturing. Originals include the incorrect track title for side two.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only quite light, reasonably fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Warps: Few vintage records are ever perfectly ‘flat’, so some slight or very gentle arm movement is normal. If any record I offer has more than that, I will mention it, and it can be assumed all I offer should track without issues, even on budget turntables.

Brief Info: The fifth album by the brilliant pioneering German band Can. It was the last to include legendary Japanese vocalist Damo Suzuki. Arguably the band’s last classic album, this with a different sound direction to previously. No way-out freak outs on this album that was more laid back in its approach. But still an edgy masterwork that culminates in the magnificent Bel Air that occupies all side two. This was Can becoming more approachable for more casual listeners. Superb musicianship and Demo still expressive as ever. Arguably a misunderstood album, especially for those who craved the avant garde, more full-on Can sound found on the sublime ‘Tago Mago’, ‘Monster Movie’ and ‘Ege Bamyasi’. For those unfamilar, Future Days is a great place to appreciate arguably the very best of the Krautrock bands. This a very fine UK original, these are now becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Generally clean and still fresh with a few light marks and creases, however the lack of rubbing on this ruthlessly revealing and wear-prone dark surface is very good news. These more often seen with heavy, ugly ring wear which this has avoided, also no sticker issues.

Cover Back: Better if anything overall, Any rim rubbing little, gentle and faint.

Top Edge: Straight with minimal wear, one moderate knock has been improved by an owner from the past, this mostly evident viewed end-on.

Bottom Edge: This shows little wear at all and again straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with any thickening tiny, little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A very impressive spine, solid, straight with barely any compression. All text is perfect and unworn, also superbly centred as-seen.

Corners: The corners are neat with very fine shape retained, very small tip-ins in blue pen are apparent, but I emphasise they are minimal. No heavy knocks, hence hardly any creasing.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this challenging and very wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This unusually fine looking item should please many collectors, but not for purists.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): only marked down for mild consistent darkening of the white paper. A plain unlined inner with hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. It has the ‘PATENT nos. 1125555’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence with any surface traces very light, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Krautrock classic plays up to, and most even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – the odd sporadic light click here-and-there to politely remind of what is being played – this does have some quiet passages and avoiding any will prove very dificult. Overall a fine clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only quite lightly and has been reasonably well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this brilliant album. The first one of these I have had in ages. It will could difficult to find significantly better, not quite for purists, but many will be happy with this and can be highly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
