The second and final album by this under-appreciated trio is by no means perfect, but it's a notable improvement on their extremely spotty self-titled debut. The Spectoresque girl groupisms are largely gone, and the R&B covers are reduced to one four-minute medley and a spectacular funky voodoo version of Mac Rebbenack's "Who Will Wear the Crown." That leaves the folk rock and lite-psych influences, and both are combined in a delightfully baroque fashion that both screams its 1968 recording date to the world and sounds uniquely timeless. The three members of the Cake, Eleanor Barooshian, Jeanette Jacobs, and Barbara Morillo, wrote seven of the ten songs in varying combinations, and that more hands-on approach (as opposed to the Jack Nitzsche-produced debut, which featured a much smaller songwriting contribution from the group) gives the album a cohesive quality lacking in the all-over-the-map debut. Many of the songs are spooky minor-key ballads, with the beautifully orchestrated although entirely inscrutable "P.T. 280" and the madrigal-like a cappella miniature "Under the Tree of Love and Laughter" among the highlights in that vein. However, the album's best track, and a minor lost classic of psych-era pop, is "Extroverted Introvert," a completely over-the-top tune (a steel band and a full orchestra!) with an unforgettable chorus and lyrics as oddball as the title. A Slice of the Cake is a terrific album just begging for rediscovery by psych-pop fetishists.

(a)            WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)             The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3 (front side) and 6 (back side)

-         Cover has a small cutout hole in one of the corners

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-         No wrinkles or creases

-         No yellowing from aging

-         No writing

-         No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-         No peel-off marks

-         No stains

-         No mold or mildew spots

-         No stickers or labels

-         No water damage

-         No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.
