Doug Sahm on Renner 45: Song Titles: Little Angel/Cry. Condition Side 1 NM/Side 2 VG+ light scratches. Labels are NM- light scuffs. This 45 is part of a collection I bought that very likely belonged to songwriter, music producer and arranger Buck Ram. For the full story read on.
Several boxes of records showed at a local swap meet recently. After spending some time going through them I realized this wasn't an ordinary collection of records. It was obvious these records belonged to someone in the business. First thing I noticed was a lot of Platter acetates. Along with the acetates there were 45's on obscure labels, multiple copies of some titles, DJ copies and labels with notations on them. After I bought the collection and started going through them I noticed that just about everything had been produced by Buck Ram and/or had his name in the song credit. I had never heard of Buck Ram before this, but of course I knew of the Platters, I always enjoyed their music but that was the extent of my interest in them. After doing a little Googling, I learned that it was Buck Ram who took a relatively unknown singing group, the Platters, and transformed them into an international sensation and stayed their manager throughout the groups career. Not only was Buck their manager, he composed their first national hit "Only You" and wrote, arranged and/or produced many of their other hits such as "The Great Pretender", "My Prayer", "Twilight Time" and "The Magic Touch".
Buck Ram took an interest in music at a very young age and carried that interest into adulthood as a songwriter, producer and arranger. He began his career arranging music for big bands such as Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Cab Calloway, Glenn Miller and Count Basie. But of course his biggest and longest sustaining achievement was his relationship with the Platters. Buck Ram had a profound effect on popular music and will always be a big name in the music business. He managed other groups such as the Penguins and helped other acts get started and created his own labels such as Personality and Antler.
I'll be auctioning off the 45's individually over the course of the next few weeks as my schedule allows. About 90% of them were produced by Buck Ram and about 90% are unplayed. Some of the labels are:Ensign, Plaza, Dee Gee, Lovelight, Press, Personality, Entree, and Antler. When I auction off the 45's I will put Buck Ram in the title to distinguish it from other auctions.
This is a no-reserve auction. I accept Paypal, check or money order. Personal checks allow 7 days upon receipt of check before shipping. Shipping and handling in the U.S. is $5.00 or $7.50 for priority mail. Combined shipping for each additional 45 is $1.00 apiece. I do combined shipping as a convenience for auction winners to save them the cost of shipping the items individually. If shipping terms are a problem, please do not bid. S&H to Canada is $5.50. Customer will pay for insurance or any additional services if desired. Shipping and handling charges for overseas customers will be determined at the conclusion of the auction.
