Bowie played the lead role of John Merrick, showcasing hisacting skills and ability to embody a character very different from his rock star’spersonality.
Chicago Run: The play ran at the Blackstone Theatre (now theMerle Reskin Theatre) in Chicago for a month in August 1980.
Critical Acclaim: Bowie's performance received widespreadpraise, with critics highlighting his ability to convey Merrick's humanity andvulnerability.
Bowie's Approach: Bowie prepared for the role by studyingMerrick's medical cast and writings, and by incorporating elements of his mimetraining to portray Merrick's physical condition.
Beyond Chicago: After the Chicago run, the play moved to NewYork's Booth Theatre on Broadway.

When the audience saw David Bowieplaying Elephant Man, they were reminded of the shame we should all feelrejecting those who are different.”
