Magnificently updating the book that he originally wrote in 1995, Mike Griffiths has teamed up with fellow long-term reggae collector and stylish graphic designer Dave Sandford for a work that’s stunning in its appearance – let alone the exhaustive information it contains.The first thing to strike you about this A5 softback is its sheer weight: no surprise, as it’s full colour throughout and printed on glossy paper. As to the content, Boss Sounds 2 covers one of the most collectable eras of Jamaican music – the skinhead years of 1968 to ’72 – with plenty of label-by-label recommendations. All the major and minor UK imprints active in the era are amply discussed; there’s a sizeable chunk on the multifarious producers; a chapter on “reggae history” for the novice; and it’s all copiously illustrated with labels, charts and record sleeve designs. The original Boss Sounds became the bible for reggae collectors. Think of this as a stunning New Testament; it’s only available through eBay, search for seller “oldwah”.
