Their eighth studio album Urd is both a continuation and extension of Borknagar's trademark sound. This Norwegian progressive black metal band are the unquestionably kings in a country of their own making. Since their beginnings in 1995, they have been known for their very distinct sound, particularly defined by their combination of soulful, yearning clean singing combined with harsh vocals. Borknagar have also been set apart by the subject matter of their music, as they draw from paganism, philosophy, even astrophysics for their lyrical content.
Borknagar have always defined themselves as an alternative filter through which black metal aesthetics could be refined. They take the spirit of that musical tradition and spiral out with it, making it more clear, complex, and grand. Where black metal is concerned with heaven and hell, Borknagar looks out over the shape of the galaxy and the sprays of stars. There is a broadness to this album, a sense of vastness and immense scope, that both celebrates the best parts of Borknagar's early work while stretching outward into a much larger soundscape to express it.
