It's all eel pies, newspaper cones and hairnets, as Bob Stanley dips into his personal archive of 70s 7" singles to unearth two dozen lost gems from the heyday of Denmark Street songcraft with Chip Shop Pop: The Sound Of Denmark Street 1970-1975. Pulling focus on a moment when sharp-suited songwriters such as Tony Macaulay, Cook & Greenaway, Barry Blue and John Carter were writing the melodic DNA of British pop. These weren't the headline-grabbing rock acts filling LP sleeves and stadiums, but the quiet operators behind radio hits that flirted with the charts, faded fast, then vanished. Names like Patches, Cold Fly and Bitter Almond won't ring bells, but the crisp harmonies, sweet hooks and lush orchestration will. First released tracks now revived, many for the first time in over fifty years.
