Description
A 1st STEREO press of Freewheelin' on the UK CBS label pressed by Phillips in 1963. Matrix 1/1. And just finding a genuine true 1st press of this title is hard enough in its own right. But this is the "STEREO" 1st press and would not have been available in regular high street shops. In '63 the stereo format was so niche you had to acquire these copies via Mail-order! Please note deadwax details are consistent with the early Philips pressings [V 420] etc.. And in '63 CBS did not have their own pressing plant in the UK. These early Philips copies are the defacto genuine 1st press and the labels are absolutely consistent with the early Philips design...mentioning '1Y/2Y' and 'Recording First Published'. The heavy set vinyl comes housed in a genuine 1st issue cover with the "<-STEREO->" logo showing top mid-centre both sides and two flipbacks exposed. **Absolute 1st press -- No earlier cut or label variation exists.**
Vinyl (Ex/Ex-) Looks to be in great condition and has only seen relatively light use. Under close inspection we could only make out a couple of light marks either side - nothing remotely troublesome. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT level of playback. The rarity factor of a record like this, in this kind of condition, cannot be overstated. The audio quality is excellent....just think how close this copy is to those original masters... On a Stereo 1st press, I'd imagine,... very very close... Beautiful quality audio rolls off of this super copy and there's certainly no need to heap any further accolades on the music itself. Interference is both minor and infrequent. All we could detect were a few random and isolated static crackles in two or three of the tracks [e.g. BITW]. Nothing persistent or invasive - just 'audible, infrequent, and minor'. All tracks playback either 'impressive' or 'very impressive'. I'll have a considerable wait to find another copy that gets even remotely close to the standard of this original stereo 1st.
Cover (Vg+) Again, do bear in mind that this is actually a true 1st issue...not a make-it-up-as-you-go-along kind of listing! Lovely clean front exhibiting nothing more than a couple of thumbnail creases and some light ageing. The rear seems to have avoided the worst of the usual ageing process and is very impressive. Edge wear is pretty light considering the age of the LP. The spine is pretty much entirely intact and only exhibits a bit of ageing. Overall the cover still retains excellent rigidity.
