Original pre-release promotional copy of Bob Dylan’s second studio album “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” released by Columbia Records on May 27th, 1963. This is one of the rarest promo copies which contains an incredibly rare original Columbia Records' insert reading "NOTICE CL 1986 / CS 8786 Please note that on Side 1, Band 3 and Band 6 are reversed." The note refers to the withdrawn track listing present on the timing strip and not the final track listing which is present on the back cover and the labels. This is the true authentic original notice manually typed on the typewriter in 1963. Original 1st print cardboard cover was made by Modern Album Finishing Co., containing the "1" number in the lower right-hand corner on the back. The front cover contains an original Columbia Records “Radio Station Service - Not For Sale” timing strip at the bottom which still indicates the withdrawn tracks: Rocks and Gravel, Let Me Die In My Footsteps, Gamblin’ Willie’s Dead Man’s Hand and Talkin’ John Birch Blues. Original promotional “Radio Station Copy - Not For Resale” 2-eye CL-1986 2.75” pressing ring white labels. This promotional copy pressed at the Columbia Records, Pitman, NJ plant represents a pre-release of the commercial copy and was shipped to radio stations and media representatives several months before the commercial release of the album on May 27th, 1963. The matrix numbers machine stamped in the trail-off vinyl of this promotional copy are the earliest ones for this album, and are as follows: Side 1 - o XLP-58717-3A P; Side 2 - o XLP-58718-2A P. The mastering of this pre-release promotional copy was performed by Customatrix Inc., New York as identified by the machine stamped “o” symbol. The album comes with the original blue stripe Columbia Records inner sleeve.
★
We grade the beautiful cover as Near Mint Minus. It only has some very light barely noticeable scuffing on the corners as well a few very light age discoloration spots on the timing strip. Aside from that, the cover is in amazing condition and doesn’t have any ring wear, soiling, writing, scuffs or wear. The rigid spine doesn’t have any scuffs containing a fully readable text. The vinyl is graded as Very Good. The vinyl retains its glossy factory lacquer but has some light non-feelable surface hairlines and marks as well as scuffs from the original inner sleeve which is in Near Mint condition and doesn’t have any splits or tears. The snow-white labels are very clean, wear- and scuff-free, only having a few very light spindle marks visible under a strong light. The original Columbia Records “Notice” insert is in great vintage condition. The vinyl sounds great with some very light occasional static. There is a short series of very light pops on Track 2 & 3 of Side 1, but our phonograph’s tonearm is set to a heavy weight and perhaps, you won’t notice them if you set your tonearm to a lighter weight. Also, this and the occasional static could get reduced or go away completely if the record was professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine.
