Billie Holiday & Louis Armstrong Decca with "F" word
Billie Holiday & Louis Armstrong do "My Sweet Hunk O' Trash" and "You Can't Lose A Broken Heart" on a white sample label Decca 24785.
The great performances aside, this record is particularly interesting to collectors because the first title features some spontaneous Armstrong banter behind Billie's vocal, including the four-letter "F" word (loud and clear).
It is said that about a month after this disc was released, Walter Winchell in his column, complained about the record's dirty word, which forced Decca to withdraw it, and put out a sanitized version, changed from "F... 'em, baby" to "How come, baby." But here it is, in all its glory!
The record is in about E- condition, but oddly the A side has 6 or 7 long lines/light scratches, and my guess is that it was intentionally done to remind the disc jockey/radio station not to play that particular side. These lines/light scratches tick faintly, but not enough to be annoying.
Both sides were written by James P. Johnson and Flournoy E. Miller from the musical production "Sugar Hill." Sy Oliver directs the Orchestra accompaniment.
I don't have the recording date, but I would guess around September of 1949.
