The following review was copy and pasted from an anonymous reviewer.
In 1958 a weathered and worn Billie Holiday entered a studio with the Ray Ellis Orchestra. The result of the recordings would be one of the most essential records of Jazz and of music in general. Holiday had been taking Tin Pan Alley tunes and turning them into Jazz standards for well over two decades when she went in to record Lady in Satin. However critics had not been kind to Holiday in the 50's , and life had been even harsher. A number of addictions , most notably heroine and alcohol , had devastated what is seen by many as the greatest voice in music. Her personal life was no better , a well publicized arrest , failed marriages , and deaths had left their mark on Holiday's image
However when she went in to record Lady In Satin no one , save maybe Holiday herself , knew what profoundly moving vocals she was still capable of. Sarah Vaughan may have had a greater range and more power , and Ella Fitzgerald more improvisational skill and popularity , but Holiday had the perfect timing and phrasing that so many artists after her have attempted to emulate. On this record from beginning to end her timing and phrasing are impeccable. Yet what makes this the single greatest vocal performance album of all time , bar none , is the emotion in Holiday's voice.
The album is a woman looking at love from all sides , being disappointed by love and at the same time being uplifted by love. She begs for love , she revels in love , and she realizes when to let go of love , even if she does not want to. A writer would need the space of a novel to attempt what Holiday accomplishes in a course of twelve tracks. Lady in Satin is a testament to what love is , through all the hardships , pains , and joys.
The tracks are all strong from the hopeful "For Heaven's Sake" to the heart-rending "The End of A Love Affair". There are tracks that are so honest only Lady Day could have delivered them correctly , "But Beautiful" and "You Don't Know What Love Is" rank among the highest. Every song is a journey through Holiday's heart as well as your own. Nestled in the middle of all these great songs is "You've Changed" , which is the highlight on an album full of highlights.
In the end it is Holiday's voice , this haunting croak that at times can be so emotional it is almost impossible to listen to. However it is so hard to forget once you have heard. Holiday makes singing , even with a torn voice , seem so simple and organic. Lady in Satin may be the finest example of what a singer can and needs to be.
Lady In Satin is so astonishingly beautiful and amazing , that it stands as a testament to what art truly is. Nearly half a century after it's recording it still remains one of the greatest albums of all time. Holiday declared that Lady in Satin was her personal favorite album , and she is obviously not alone in that opinion. Maybe Holiday summed up her uniqueness and importance best when she said "No two people on earth are alike, and it's got to be that way in music or it isn't music.". However one thing is definite , Lady in Satin is the finest record from the woman who truly earned the title "Our Lady of Perpetual Suffering".

GOLDMINE grading standards used.
MINT (M) Absolutely perfect in every way.
Near Mint (M-) A nearly perfect record. The record shows no obvious sign of wear. The vinyl or sleeve should have at the most a very minor defect.
Very Good Plus,Plus(VG )May have a tiny scuff, light scratch or insignificgant defect that prevents me from grading it Near Mint.
Very Good Plus (VG ) Worth 1/2 the value of near mint. A VG will show signs of being played and handled. The vinyl will show signs of surface wear it may have scuffs or light scratches that don't affect the listening experience. They may have slight warps that do not affect the sound.
The label or picture sleeve may have light ringwear or discoloration. P.S. might have a turned up corner or a slight seam split.
Very Good (VG) Many of the defects found in a VG record will be more pronounced in a VG record.Surface noise will be evident when playing, especially in soft passages and during a songs intro and fade as well as between the tracks. The noise should not overpower the music.
Groove wear will start to be noticeable,as will light scratches (deep enough to feel with a finger nail) that will affect the sound.
Labels may have writing,or tape or stickers (or their residue)attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves.A VG record should have no more than 2 or 3 of these problems at the same time.Regardless of defects found in VG vinyl it is an inexpensive alternative to a NM copy.A VG record is a desirable addition for many collectors.
Good (G), Good Plus (GD ) Will have any one or more of the above listed defects. Either one can be played on a turntable without skipping. It will have significant surface noise and scratches as well as visible groove wear.
A sleeve will have seam splits.Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will be much more pronounced.
Poor (P),Fair (F) Can be cracked, warped won't play through without skipping or repeating. The picture sleeve is water damaged ,split on all 3 sides or heavily laden with with wear or writing. These would only be sought after if they are extremely rare and held until a better copy comes along.
