A rare and hard to find 1960s UK Jazz LP record
"The Road To Ellingtonia" by Bill Le Sage's 'The Direction In Jazz Unit' Rare UK 60s Jazz Collectors item. Philips BL 7673. First pressing. According to the run out this is 632338 1L/2L number 420. In his review of British Jazz pianists from the 1950s to the 1970s, Simon Spillet is full of praise for Bill le Sage's wide range of accomplishements and states ... "......and his Directions In Jazz Unit, formed in 1963, took a sincere look at the concept of chamber jazz, uniting a jazz sextet with the Freddie Alexander 'Cello Ensemble. Two thoroughly successful and typically musicianly albums recorded for the Philips label in the 1960s (Directions In Jazz and The Road To Ellingtonia) have since become rare collectors' items." http://www.jazzscript.co.uk/extra/brit.piano.htm This was recorded in London on May 3rd 1965 and released later that year. It features Bob Burns, Johnny Scott and Ronnie Ross on reeds backed by Spike Heatley on bass and Tony Carr on drums, with Le Sage on piano and vibes as well as doing the arranging for the sextet and for the four cellos of these ten Duke Ellington classics.
Condition
Vinyl - Excellent, it looks and plays near mint. No scratches pops or clicks. Labels show very little evidence of play.
Cover - The laminated front is in VG+ condition, no scuffs, creases, bends, folds or tears. Just two small areas where there appears to be a tiny bit of residue - possible from adhesive labels being removed in the past. There is very slight ring marking when viewed from certain angles and a very faint mark near the top of the ring. The matt reverse is clean with very clear text.
Inner sleeve - Plastic lined, intact with a little fading.
