Bill Frisell – Have A Little Faith Vinyl Me, Please. Classics – VMP-C090
Between the bookended Billys — one a legendary desperado, the other a lovelorn folk music fixture — Bill Frisell unravels and reweaves all manner of spangled banners across the continental vastness of Have a Little Faith. The guitarist’s most outright celebration of Americana in its various strains and strangenesses, Faith plays like a road trip up eastbound Route 66, invoking the gunfire and grandeur of Aaron Copland’s Wild West ballet, Billy The Kid, the tender curves of Dylan’s kiss-off, ‘’Just Like a Woman,'' and the distinguished discord of a lightning- storm rendering of Madonna’s ‘’Live to Tell.'' Marrying the moody atmospherics of his ECM recordings with the breakneck impressionism forged in his forays as a John Zorn co-conspirator, Frisell masterfully leads a deeply sympathetic group — bassist Kermit Driscoll, drummer Joey Baron, accordionist Guy Klucevsek and clarinetist Don Byron — through heartfelt evocations of the States and the cultural threads which unite them, however loosely. In its inspired detours down Bourbon Street, 52nd Street, Main Street, Have a Little Faith waves the grand old flag of a new, weird America.
