The Bilders is the professional appellation for numerous groups of musicians led by New Zealand singer-songwriter Bill Direen and performing his material. Direen began recording in 1978, when working as a community reporter and DJ for a provincial radio station (Radio Marlborough). He is known for literate lyrics, challenging song-subjects and a lo-fi recording style that has produced "many genuine classic compositions"

This is the first of a four-volume collection of Bill Direen's work in the 80's. One of the most underrated and talented songwriters of the Flying Nun scene in the 80's, he was the Bob Pollard of his day... writing brief and jagged garage pop songs on the easiest medium to record, and always performing and recording under whichever name he thought would be appropriate.
