Description
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and exceedingly rare (still-sealed) 3LP box set from Deutsche Grammophon (419 761-1, manufactured in West Germany, DDD stereo) features Leonard Bernstein's last large-scale work, his remarkable opera A Quiet Place, made with libretist Stephen Wadsworth and incorporating the former's earlier musical theater piece 'Trouble in Tahiti' (words and music by Leonard Bernstein). DG's recording of A Quiet Place was made 'live' at the Wiener Staatsoper in 1986 with the Bernstein leading the ORF-Symponie-Orchester (Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra) and the following cast:
Chester Ludgin: Old Sam
Beverly Morgan: Dede
John Brandstetter: Junior
Peter Kazaras: François
Jean Kraft: Susie
Theodor Uppman: Bill
Clarity James: Mrs. Doc
John Kuether: Doc
Charles Walker: Funeral Director
Douglas Perry: Analyst
Wendy White: Dinah
Edward Crafts: Young Sam
Louise Edeiken: Trio
Mark Thomsen: Trio
Kurt Ollmann: Trio
Whatever the prestige of the Vienna State Opera, it was not the ideal place to debut A Quiet Place, and Bernstein's opera was rather poorly received by both the Viennese critics and audiences. DG were no doubt reluctant to undertake such a recording, but they did it for their brilliant American conductor, though it enjoyed a fairly brief catalog life. Despite its faults, it remains a fascinating work with moments of great beauty and poignancy.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the still-sealed box is near-MINT. The shrinkwrap remains almost entirely intact, though there appears to be a bit of discoloration at corners – whether or not this discoloration is on the shrinkwrap or on the box, I cannot say for certain (I suspect it is on the shrinkwrap). In any case, the box is free of seamsplits, corner breaks, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains extremely solid, bright, glossy, and striking in appearance – very much an outstanding collector's copy.
The condition of the 3 LPs is MINT throughout – these are sealed, unplayed copies – the perfect collector's copies.
