My top four favorite violin concertos created after 1900 include Sibelius, Glazunov, Korngold and of course the Walton. Id say the Walton is my third favorite.
The first time I heard this concerto, it grabbed my attention. Mr. Walton created something really different and unique here and will offer the listener a sense of something new and fresh. If you like this concerto make sure to check out the Walton Viola Concerto also, they both are really fantastic pieces of music. This cd by Ms Chung is an essential part of my violin cd collection, it simply would not be complete without. I have many recordings of the Walton including Heifetz, Perlman, and Bell just to name the better recordings I have heard and this one is my favorite, how sad it is so hard to find.
It says on his website that Mr. James Ehnes is about to record this, we will see if he does better. Actually, better does not seem possible, we will see if he plays as well and meaningfully...

...is what Sir Walton himself wrote to Bruno Walter about Kyung Wha Chung's playing his own concerto. It is a famous episode that Walton visited the recording studio, when Kyung Wha Chung was recording his concerto (this very CD here), and encouraged her. 10 years after, it was again Ms. Chung who played the concerto at the concert in celebration of Walton's 80th birthday. Kyung Wha Chung herself mentioned, in her interview with Strad in early 80's, that Walton's concerto is her most favorite.
These are just bits of episodes for your interest, which may let you understand the strong bond between the music and Ms. Chung, immortalized on this record. I've mentioned Tchaikovsky's concerto has so much in common with the violinist in terms of character, and I think I can say the same about Walton's concerto. Only here, she digs deeper into subtle colours and emotions this great concerto has beyond her ever-so-passionate interpretation; lyricism, gloom, and then the next moment wit and even humor, and all in technical brilliance and incomparable sense of tempo. Her bow sings and fires and dances.
There are of course brilliant Heifetz and Bell, and some others, but you can hardly find any other as strongly engaged with the music itself as young Kyung Wha Chung here on this record.
