Description

This is an original 1968 United States White Label Promotional pressing of the Bee Gees' fifth studio album, Idea. Issued exclusively to American AM radio stations and prominent DJs, this limited edition copy represents the only official domestic mono release of the album. Standard commercial copies in the U.S. were distributed strictly in stereo, making this specific dedicated mono mix highly coveted by audiophiles and serious collectors.
Released in August 1968, Idea captures the Bee Gees at the peak of their late-60s psychedelic pop-rock era, yielding timeless tracks like "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" and "Kitty Can".
During this late-1960s transition period, major record labels were rapidly phasing out mono albums for commercial retail. However, because AM radio stations still broadcasted strictly in monaural sound, ATCO pressed a small number of these custom black-on-white "Sample Copy — Not For Sale" LPs. The dedicated mono mix featured here differs noticeably from the standard stereo counterpart, showcasing punchier drum tracking, different vocal balances, and a warmer mid-range frequency intended to cut through the airwaves.
