READ THIS! These records are NOT sold for perfect sound quality. They’re sold for their scarcity and VISUAL grading. They’ve been in storage for a decade, and they WILL play with surface noise that can be addressed with D4 or a VPI cleaning.  I can’t test-play at the minute. This looks like a Jacksonville-supported pressing.

For those of us who collect foreign pressings, collectors know that this title was largely issued in Canada with the same label graphics as in the U.S., with John’s face on Side 1, and a white Apple on Side 2.  These are the commonly-found RCA-pressed copies out of Ontario. (See Compere photo.) 

But what many collectors don’t know is that there was a small quantity pressed by Compo with green Apple labels.  These have the Jacksonville high gloss and Decca-esque concentric ring close to the playhole.  The text, like the labels is also very similar to the Jacksonville plant’s in-house labels.  Most interesting to me is that the “Mfd. By Apple Records, Inc.” disclaimer is found on the sliced Apple side of the record, which in the States was the Apple label variation that was thought not to exist after 1970.

This pressing is MUCH harder to find.

Vinyl--- VG+/VG+.  Still a strong grade.  90% original shine.  Some manufacturer’s defects, and a few light scratches per side.  Side 2 has some track marks that are non-feelable, probably from the pressing plant.  I brightened them in the photo, but they aren’t this bad in person.

Plates--- Z19/Z19.  The dead wax lacks the letter “O,” however; the configuration also looks like Jacksonville-made pressing plates.  The catalogue numbers are large, and they fill the dead wax width, which is a very Jax trait.  Also, the Z19 on Side 2 is underscored by little dots, also Jax.  Machine-stamped “Bell Sound” and “sf” are also found on both sides, meaning that these plates were prepared by Sam Feldman of Bell Sound in New York.

Cover--- EX.  Beautiful cover still retains 100% of the glossy film that usually dries out and peels off over time.  The only flaws I can see are that on the top seam, there’s a small crunch above the word, “Imagine,” and a small line of dirt on the back cover along the spine.  NO SPLIT SEAMS.

Labels--- EX/VG+.  Side 1 label looks nearly brand new.  Side 2 label has some flaws from the factory.  Mainly popped bubbles in the high gloss around the label’s circumference, and a light semi-circular scratch just above the “Mfd. By Apple” disclaimer at the bottom.  NO SPINDLE MARKS.

Poster--- EX.  Back of poster has very slightly yellowed.  Little to no finger divots.  NO SPLITS AT THE INTERSECTIONS OF THE FOLDS.

Postcards--- EX/EX. Both postcards look nearly new.  Canadian postcards lack the “Made in U.S.A.” circle, as these both don’t have. The only noticeable flaw is that the backs of both cards have lightly yellowed.  NO FINGER DIVOTS.

Apple Inner Sleeve--- VG. Generic Canadian white inner sleeve with no die-cut hole for the labels to show is present.  Sleeve is the parchment quality paper that Canada used at the time.  These sleeves yellowed easily, and this one has as well.  There’s a combination of parchment wrinkles, light record outdent and some finger divots, but NO SPLIT SEAMS.

A generic inner sleeve will be provided, so as not to damage your original Apple Canada inner sleeve en route.

RIAA: N/A.

As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up.  Thanks!)
