Welcome to 20th Century Collectables

Quality vinyl for the discerning collector

THE BEATLES - SGT PEPPERS LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND

This 1st UK STEREO pressing dates from the initial release date of June 1967. A stunning investment grade copy on the black yellow Parlophone label with 'Sold in UK…' text and KT tax code. PCS 7027

This stereo copy has early stampers from the initial batch of stereo pressings and was almost certainly pressed ahead of the June 1st 1967 release date on or around May 1967 and would have formed part of the advanced orders.

Stereo in 1967 was still being outnumbered by mono in vast numbers and so of the two mixes the original stereo mix of Pepper is by far the rarest. It is significantly different from its mono counterpart.

The vinyl on this copy is stunning, is unmarked and can only have received 4 or 5 very careful plays in its 46 year history. Pepper copies in this condition (especially in stereo) rarely come onto the market.

The audio is absolutely stunning.

This stereo mix was undertaken by George Martin and Geoff Emerick in April 1967 and completed on the 21st of that month. It differs from its mono counterpart; for example, ‘She’s Leaving Home’ is mastered at the correct speed of 3 mins 34 secs as opposed to 3 mins 26secs on the mono version, there are of course other differences.

Matrix numbers: YEX 637-1 & YEX 638-1

Stamper codes: 4/RT & 1/RD (First mother)

CONDITION

Disc

Visual: MINT-

I’m reluctant to give this an all out MINT grading as it has the faintest of fine near invisible whispy sleeve removal marks visible under intense halogen lighting but essentially it is totally unmarked and is as close to MINT as one can reasonably get. Truth is that it probably left the factory in this condition as records were stacked together prior to them being put into their inner sleeves. In short, the vinyl is stunning, still retains its high gloss sheen and appears shop fresh. The heavy duty disc lies 100% flat on the turntable. A wonderfully preserved investment grade copy.

Audio: MINT

Outstanding unworn and distortion free audio which will not disappoint. A true audiophile copy. The depth, richness and clarity of the music shines through and in my opinion this original stereo analogue mix still outshines the new re-mastered version. The warmth and depth of this  original 1967 analogue sound has all the detail and sonic presence of the original Abbey Road master tapes and whilst it is interesting listening to the new re-mastered version the original '67 stereo mix is by definition the de facto version. It will not disappoint. Needless to say the record does not jump or stick.

Labels: EXC+/MINT-

A superb set of labels with only the faintest traces of light spindle marks only visible in certain directional light. Side one carries the KT tax code.

Cover

EXCELLENT

An original 1st issue patents pending Garrod & Lofthouse cover. The front panel is in wonderful unworn condition with only some very light thumbnail creases to the laminate, only visible in certain directional light. The back panel is unworn with no marks other than the occasional laminate crease towards the spine. The spine has some wear to the corners and signs of light storage wear and ageing. The interior gatefold is pristine and crackles as new when opened. It became clear when I took the gatefold picture that the sleeve has never been fully opened. A superb example of this iconic Peter Blake / Michael Cooper cover and very severely graded at excellent, most sellers would grade higher.

Cut-out  MINT

Untouched in 46 years

Inner-sleeve Excellent+

Original red psychedelic inner with moderate signs of natural ageing. All seams are intact.
