THE BEATLES - 'WITH THE BEATLES'

1963 UK *PYE* CONTRACT PRESSING LP

**RARE & GENUNINE EXAMPLE**

It is widely known that Decca pressed up a quantity of this title & 'Please, Please Me' in early 1964 to help EMI meet demand.
However, much less has been reported about the PYE pressing of this album. PYE did press up some copies of 1973 double LP '1962-66' which appear translucent red when held up against strong light. However 1960's PYE pressings were not manufactured with that type of vinyl so a different method of identification is needed here.


Firstly, this disc has different mother/stamper codes in each run-out. Side 1 bears the numbers '3,12' & 'PB' machine stamped and a tiny hand-etched '2', all in the 9 o'clock position. The letter 'A' is the only character in the 3 o'clock position. Side 2 (shown above, left) has the numbers '2,11' & again 'PB' machine stamped then a tiny hand-etched '5', all in the 9 o'clock position. The letter 'A' is again in the 3 o'clock position.
The relief of the label (shown above, right) is slightly more pronounced on this pressing, although this is difficult to see from a photograph alone.


The outer edges/rims are also different - as I have attempted to show above. The PYE discs's edges are much flatter and sharper than the EMI pressing.

This extremely scarce & seldom seen PYE contract pressing is on the black & yellow Parlophone label: PMC 1206
Both labels omit the 'Sold in UK...' text but include 'Parlophone Co Ltd...' rims.
The side 2 label carries the corrected 'You Really Got A Hold On Me' spelling.
The publishing credit for 'Money' is 'Dominion. Belinda'.
There is no tax/price code is visible on either label.

Housed in a front laminated, tri-flipback 'Garrod & Lofthouse' printed mono cover.
The rear panel bears the corrected 'You Really Got A Hold On Me' spelling.
Complete with its original 'Use Emitex' rice-paper lined inner-sleeve.

Matrix numbers: XEX 447-7N & XEX 448-7N
Stamper numbers: 3,12,PB 2/A & 2,11,PB 5/A

Labels: Side 1: VERY GOOD Side 2: EXCELLENT

There is a small, initial written in the yellow pound logo on side 1. Side 2 is unmarked.

Visual: Side 1: VERY GOOD PLUS Side 2: VERY GOOD

Side 1 is bright, clean & glossy and bears just an occaisional light stylus hairline and small fingernail mark but no major faults.
Side 2 displays some inner-sleeve removal hairlines in daylight together with a few light hairline scratches but again, nothing deep or significant.
Close inspection directly under a halogen desk lamp reveals numerous inner-sleeve removal hairlines but no futher wear.

Audio: Side 1: EXCELLENT Side 2: VERY GOOD

Despite frequent play, this copy has no major audible faults to either side.
Some light background & an occaisional light click is audible between some tracks on side 2.
However side 1 plays cleanly & clearly, without any significant wear.
Hard to find in any condition.


Cover: EXCELLENT MINUS

This clean, unyellowed example retains an excellent unscratched front laminate.
There are two bends to the lower corner areas but no further significant wear or even any 'thumbnails' near the opening edge.
All corners are clean & sharp with minimal storagewear and both opening edges are unworn with no tears or 'feathering'.
The rear panel is clean & bright white with no toning, marks or writing.
All flipbacks, seams and the spine are intact, unsplit & undamaged.
